Number 33 Palmeira Mansions

Number 33 Palmeira Mansions truly is a hidden gem. The Grade II listed building is a language school by day, but concealed inside is a lavish interior of marble, stained glass, and Victorian finery.

The Twisted Lemon

Tucked away down a narrow, lemon-coloured pathway off Middle Street sits The Twisted Lemon – one of Brighton’s most loved cocktail bars.

Named after the run-out groove of a record, Dead Wax Social Brighton, in the heart of the eclectic North Laine, brings a new bar to the City for those of us that are done with digital!

To those people who thought Vinyl was done, you were wrong! Vinyl is on the rise with sales hitting an 18 year high in 2014 and only looking to grow in coming years. As if to echo the growing love for that magical music making black plastic and all things scratchy, Dead Wax Social comes to the North Laine this June where no digital music will be played, no CDs, no exceptions!
The ethos behind Dead Wax Social is a longing to do things in the real world as opposed to spending all our time with our head in our lap tops and to create a place with crafted items and people at it’s core.
The bar aims to be the new community hub for those that work in Brighton’s vibrant music industry as well as anyone that loves music, both echoing and strengthening the role their beloved record shops have provided over the years. Dead Wax wants to create a space where people can share their favourite records whether it’s from a local DJ’s favourite record collection or from customers bringing their latest purchases in to preview straight from Brighton’s famous record shops. There will also be an Album Club with records chosen from local musicians, as well as lots of fun events including record fairs, launches and label birthday parties.
When it comes to the interior of the new bar, the theme of vinyl continues with a mural dedicated to 70 of Dead Wax Social’s favourite Brighton record labels and shops covering the walls, alongside 7” vinyl art from Daniel Tolhurst.
Although there’s a heavy focus on music, food and drink doesn’t fall by the wayside with eight craft beers available on the taps at any one time, from the very best breweries including Fourpure, Magic Rock, Laine’s and Redchurch, some of which will be so limited edition that when it’s gone it’s gone! All of the beers will be available in 1/3 pints, 2/3 pints (schooners) and the usual pints and halves. Food wise expect delicious artisan pizzas on 7” and 12” sourdough bases.
So say ‘viva vinyl!’ and visit Dead Wax Social Brighton for super sounds, banging beers and excellent eats!

The Hope and Ruin Brighton

THE FACTS

[one_half last=”no”]NAME: Hope & Ruin
PREVIOUSLY KNOWN AS: The Hope
IT’S: A pub/bar and live music venue
OPENED: Thursday 12th February 2015
DID YOU KNOW: The interior is inspired by Eastern European bars
LOCATION: A 5 minute walk to Brighton Station and Churchill Square
ADDRESS: 11-12 Queens Road, Brighton, BN1 3WA
OPENING TIMES: Sun-Weds 12pm – 12am, Thurs – Sat 12pm – 2am

[one_half last=”yes”][googlemap width=”295″ height=”245″ src=”https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=THE+HOPE+BRIGHTON&client=safari&oe=UTF-8&fb=1&gl=uk&cid=6571550281719148444&t=m&z=16&iwloc=A “][/one_half]

The Hope and Ruin Brighton is the refit/teardown of the much loved Hope on Queens Road, Brighton. Expect an increased capacity for gigs upstairs, a full food menu, an expanded range of craft beers, brewery fresh lager, and a very different new look.

Ask any of those helpful property programme presenters and they’ll tell you – keep things neutral, keep things tidy. But surely we’ve had enough of that dull order now. It’s time for character. Character is wear and tear, it’s cramming a room with things you love, character is chaos.
The new look comes from the team travelling in eastern Europe where bars are frequently cobbled together out of reclaimed spaces using anything the owners can get hold of in that theme ingenious use of found objects to make the bar look like nothing you’ve seen before with some reclaimed objects so big you could literally live inside them.
The venue upstairs has become a more practical live music space by moving the bar to the back of the room. The stage is higher (and larger), the air-con more powerful, the bands bigger, the programming more dynamic. Unmissable gigs like The Strokes, Adele and Bonnie Prince Billy (who have all played in the venue) are only going to increase. The support of the local music scene will remain, as well as making space for upcoming acts like top-selling songwriter George Ezra and 2015 BRIT Award Critics’ Choice winner James Bay, who both played in 2014. Of course there’ll be DJs at the weekend and acoustic evenings, but there’ll also be nights for zine-makers, writers and artists.
For the first time there’ll be a full food menu of interesting dishes, including vegetarian and vegan options, Sunday roasts and an express menu for punters attending shows upstairs. The bar’s expanded range of beers now features a continental-style tank lager: smooth, unfiltered and unpasteurised beer poured directly from the tank into your glass, completely brewery fresh.
The Hope & Ruin Brighton will be completely unique, and one of the most visually arresting bars you will ever drink in, certainly in Brighton, and the venue has taken a big step up. The pairing will be exhilarating.
