Brighton is often said to be at its best in Summer which tourists certainly seem to agree with, as thousands of people flock to the beach in the warmer months to soak up some sun. However, this can lead to the beach becoming unpleasantly overcrowded, with little space to move, relax, or really enjoy yourself. There is a solution, though. If you want to enjoy some time on the beach this Summer but don’t want to deal with the crowds in Brighton, you might want to consider a day trip to Worthing’s beautiful beach instead.

All about Worthing Beach

What’s more, the beachfront Lido is a fantastic place to visit for families with a variety of amusements, such as outdoor children’s rides, trampolines, and a mixture of modern and traditional arcade games, including the classic 2p machines. There is also zoning for water sports, with the quieter space making it the ideal space for beginners and experts alike, although visitors should not that there is no lifeguard service.

Worthing Beach also boasts its own pier. Originally built in 1862, this historic pier offers stunning views of the sea and coastline towards Brighton and beyond. At the entrance sits the Pavilion Theatre, an elegant venue built in 1926 that hosts a wide variety of events. Along the Pier is a free exhibition of art by local artists, which can be enjoyed by everyone walking along the Pier at any time.

As well as the classic entertainment arcade one might expect from a seaside town, Worthing Pier also has a fantastic café offering a range of hot drinks, food, and soft drinks. The palm-tree-lined Promenade opposite the beach also offers a fantastic range of cafes, bars, and restaurants, meaning you’ll be sure to find a great place to go for any occasion.

Splash Point and Coast Café

Another notable feature of Worthing’s seafront is the Splash Point on East Beach. With a unique interactive water feature, this exciting attraction has something for everyone. As well as enjoying the water feature, you can also play volleyball, crazy golf, or watch artists at work in the East Beach Studios.

The adjoining Coast Café has a range of refreshments including ice cream, and the brand-new beach garden offers a relaxing and scenic place to unwind. From Saturday 4th-Sunday 26th May, Brighton Festival will be back in the city for another year of displaying the most exciting new and returning talent from Sussex and beyond. With over 100 events taking place throughout the month, you’re sure to find something you’ll love at Brighton Festival.

Originally established in 1967, Brighton Festival’s first guests included iconic performances such as Laurence Olivier, Pink Floyd, and Anthony Hopkins, but has grown over the years to include both new local performers and popular international acts.

What’s on at the brighton festival in 2024?

This year, some of the most prolific acts taking the stage include critically acclaimed spoken-word poet Kae Tempest on 10th May and legendary DJ Norman Jay MBE, co-founder of London music station KISS FM.

There is a huge range of different events available, from music to literature, with entertainment to suit absolutely everyone; more information is available on the Brighton Festival website.

As well as a huge variety of music events, Brighton Festival is also playing host to several debates and spoken-word events. Caroline Lucas, Brighton’s Green MP will share her new book exploring national identity with audiences on 5th May, in an example of one of the many different events taking place throughout the month.

There are also over 25 different events being hosted that cater towards young people, such as two writing workshops on the 5th of May hosted by Michelle Harrison & Alexandra Sheppard, and the Children’s Illustration Exhibition at the Book Nook running from 4th-26th May. Brighton Festival caters to all ages with its events, so be sure to check them out.

Despite the Cost-of-Living crisis forcing everybody to tighten purse strings at the moment, Brighton Festival offers a selection of free events so that those struggling can still enjoy some of what they have to offer. There are 20 different completely free events all across the city, such as film screenings, theatre performances, and art exhibitions.

At a time when so many are struggling to make ends meet, often the arts are the first industry affected. Granting access to arts to people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford them allows for wider exposure for artists, and by extension wider support.

There are over 100 events taking place over the month of the Brighton Festival, plus countless acts performing as part of the Great Escape (which is a separate festival but takes place alongside the Brighton Festival in May) and Brighton Fringe, making it one of the biggest and most exciting events in the calendar for the Southeast.

Whatever your budget and whatever you’re after, be it live music, theatre, or outdoor events, Brighton Festival has it. Head to their website as soon as possible to book tickets or for more information on any of the listed events.

The historic town of Lewes, only 10 miles from the centre of Brighton, has much more to offer than one might expect. From an array of independent shops, cafes, and cosy country pubs to the annual Lewes Bonfire, Lewes is a countryside town that has charmed many over the years, including founding father Thomas Paine and writer Virginia Woolf. Perhaps the most famous attraction in Lewes, however, is its medieval castle, situated to the north of the high street & overlooking the whole town.

The history of Lewes castle

The traditional motte and bailey castle was built in the late 11th Century, shortly after the Norman conquest of 1066. It was one of the only two castles in this style to have two hilltop keeps, making it truly unique. Although it played an important role in medieval England, by the 17th Century the castle was essentially just a ruin.

However, restoration work that took place throughout the 18th and 19th Centuries helped to bring back some of the castle’s former glory. Although the West Tower was altered and Gothic-style windows replaced the arrow slits, most of the medieval features were kept the same so that the castle did not lose its traditional feel.

The Sussex Archaeological Society leased the castle from 1850 and once Charles Thomas-Stanford acquired it, he gifted it to the Sussex Archaeological Society in 1922.

Climbing the steps to the Keep will grant you beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding South Downs, and information plaques dotted around the castle offer more insight into its long and fascinating history, as well as its importance in the growth of the town.

Barbican House Museum at Lewes Castle

Attached to the castle is the Barbican House Museum, which explores the archaeological history of Lewes and the wider Sussex area. The museum houses artefacts from prehistoric to medieval Sussex, as well as temporary exhibitions that change on a regular basis. This is also where you can purchase tickets to visit the castle.

The museum is open all year round, while the castle is open every month except for November and December. Between January and March, it opens from 10 am – 4 pm, extending to 10 am – 5 pm from April to October.

Tickets for adults cost £10, children aged 5-17 and students pay £5.50, seniors tickets cost £9.00, and children under 5 visit for free. The website has more information on purchasing group tickets, including family tickets.

Lewes Castle is an impressive feature in the South Downs landscape with a rich, fascinating history, and is well worth a visit.

Every Spring, Brighton’s colourful streets become awash with talent and creativity from some of the country’s most exciting and unique new talents. The month of May is filled with exciting things to do in Brighton and attracts a huge amount of visitors.

From live music of all genres to comedy, art exhibitions, theatre and spoken word events, there are events to suit all interests and to fit all budgets, with some events being free or as little as £2. This year, Brighton Fringe will take place from Friday 3rd May to Sunday 2nd June.

The Ladyboys of Bangkok at Brighton Fringe

The most popular event at Brighton Fringe is The Ladyboys of Bangkok, which this year will be posted at Victoria Gardens. A hugely popular show among tourists and residents of Brighton, this year they celebrate their 25th anniversary of the show with a fun-filled and exciting new show, which is supposed to be better than ever.

The show has generated rave reviews from audiences ever since it was established, so there’s no better time to see it than on its special 25th-anniversary tour. Tickets start from £17, and the show runs for the entire length of the Fringe, so you have plenty of opportunity to catch it (please note that this is an 18+-only event).

Live music at Brighton Fringe

Brighton Fringe also plays host to a huge variety of live music, with over 30 different events & performances taking place over the month. Whatever your taste in music, there’s sure to be an event to your preference, whether it’s classical, jazz, disco, soul, blues, or anything in between.

Furthermore, it’s the perfect opportunity to check out something a little different to what you’re used to, such as Rueda with the London Gaita Social Club, who are “bringing a slice of the Caribbean to Brighton” on 25th May, and international Sitar player Lakshay Mohan playing an arrangement of classical Indian sitar music on 18th May.

Whatever you’re after from your music, there’s sure to be an event to your taste. More details about other events can be found on their official website.

Theatre and Comedy at Brighton Fringe

Brighton Fringe is also famous for its theatre and comedy performances, such as performances by local theatre groups, modern retellings of classic plays, and the most recent and topical comedy sets by the country’s most exciting new comedians.

The Fringe has always been renowned for its truly staggering variety, and this year’s exhibit is no different. Between 4th-11th May, Brighton Little Theatre Co. are staging an adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 classic Little Women.

For something a bit more unique, check out The Elagabalia between 6th-8th May, the brand-new comedy about Roman Emperor Elagabalus, best known for his sexual promiscuity, eccentricity, and gender expression.

If it’s local talent you’re after, however, the inaugural ‘Made in Sussex’ program on 13th April is a showcase of local artists demonstrating their talents in areas such as theatre, comedy, folk music, and more. Whatever you want, Brighton Fringe has it.

As for the comedians performing this year, attendees of the festival will certainly have a wealth of options. At Bleach, the room upstairs at the Hare and Hounds, the local improv troupe Tea & Toast are once again performing their entirely improvised musical Bla Bla Land from 3rd-10th May. following their sold-out run last year.

If you want to see stand-up comedy, there are shows across the course of the month from acts such as Paul Marsh, Raul Kolhi, Mark Bittlestone, and Michelle Shaughnessy. There are over 200 comedy events listed on the official website, however, so be sure to check them out for more details on these shows or for more events taking place.

other information about the fringe

The cost-of-living crisis in Britain has hit the entertainment and arts industry hard over the past couple of years, with countless venues across the country closing their doors as a result. However, Brighton Fringe is offering over 100 free events throughout the month at a variety of venues.

Stand-up comedy sets, music showcases, art exhibitions, literature readings, workshops, and classical music concerts are just some of the events on offer across the duration of the festival for absolutely no cost.

These events not only allow you to still enjoy some of the best entertainment Brighton Fringe has to offer for free but also allow rising stars in the entertainment industry to gain exposure and a following at the start of their career and provide the chance to support some of Brighton’s best-loved independent bars & venues at a time where support is more crucial than ever for small, locally-owned venues.

For more information on free events and participating venues, as well as how best to support them, head to the official Brighton Fringe website (link below)

Brighton Fringe is a truly unique festival; the atmosphere each year when it begins in May is comparable to that of a holiday for the whole month, and Brighton’s already highly creative and eccentric nature is further highlighted.

From the point of view of a resident, it’s the city at its best; emphasising the arts and providing a platform to new and underrepresented talents that one would be hard-pressed to come by anywhere else in the country outside of the capital. With over 600 events in one month, it’s not to be missed.

Casablanca is a jazz club, located in Brighton’s South Lanes, that has a well-earned reputation as being a lively and exciting late-night venue. On the first floor is a charming bar area for those after a more laid-back vibe, but it’s downstairs that is often the main attraction.

Wednesdays and Thursdays see a live band taking to the stage to play covers of everyone’s favourite club hits, meaning you can enjoy your standard night out with a fun difference. Thursdays are the main student nights, with special drink deals available and £5 entry all night. Casablanca is another firm favourite with students and once you visit, it won’t be hard to see why.

Concorde 2

Concorde 2 is one of Brighton’s best-known live music venues, but it also hosts many popular club nights and DJ sets. However, its most infamous event is without a doubt Polyglamorous.

Previously hosted at Chalk, Polyglamorous takes place on the first Friday of every month and is a celebration of all things queer. Every month has a different theme and features a rotating cast of phenomenal drag performers, as well as pop and queer anthems for you to dance the night away in a safe and inclusive environment that doesn’t simply tolerate queer people, but celebrates them and the importance of queer joy.

Polyglamorous is, in my opinion, Concorde’s star attraction and everyone should experience it at least once, though once you’ve been to one, it’s likely you’ll never want to miss another.

Patterns

Found on Brighton’s iconic seafront, Patterns in Kemptown has a lot to offer. Upstairs is a bar serving a variety of beers, wines, and spirits, as well as cocktails for anyone who wants a more chilled vibe for their evening. Their ground floor and basement club rooms are where the excitement happens, however.

As well as a variety of live music events and guest DJ sets, Patterns frequently plays host to club nights such as Freshers events from as little as £2 entry, making it perfect for students on a budget. On Fridays, they host a ‘FNKY FRDY’ event, where selected DJs will play a carefully crafted selection of funk, soul, and much more. With £5 doubles on house spirits all night, it’s a great event for anyone looking to kickstart their weekend with a bang while also saving money.

The Mash Tun

Although Mash Tun is technically a pub, its late-night atmosphere qualifies it for a place on this list in my opinion. Open until 2 am Monday-Thursday and until 3 am Friday and Saturday, Mash is often the destination of many a student on a night out looking for a good time and a lively atmosphere.

While in the day this pub is filled with people who are sat down with drinks, by night their iconic red LEDs come on and the tables are pushed back to create a dance floor for you to dance to your heart’s content. With DJs throughout the week and discounts on selected drinks for students, Mash is a fantastic lively venue and a guaranteed great night out.

Komedia

Komedia is a part of the Duke of York’s cinema chain and although it is more famous for that and its live events, it also hosts a number of fantastic themed club nights. Lately, they’ve played host to Gal Pals, the club night exclusively for women and non-binary people and an important safe space to also have fun, as well as emo nights and even a Rocky Horror-themed night.

The one event, however, that Komedia consistently sells out is Swiftoggedon, a night solely dedicated to the music of Taylor Swift. Every single event is sold out by the time it happens and has queues stretching down the street for Swifties to enjoy four hours of pure Taylor, from her top hits to fan favourites to the deep cuts. It’s a fantastic night where everyone feels safe and welcome and is able to bond over one common interest and a great place to make friends. Komedia is a great space to host this incredible event and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
