Artista Café & Gallery

Artista began in the early 2010s as a small photographic studio offering model portfolios, event shoots, and creative workshops. Its collaborative spirit quickly drew together a community of photographers, models, and artists, laying the foundations for something much bigger.

In 2014, Artista opened on Waterloo Street in Hove, evolving into a café, gallery, and performance venue at the heart of Brighton’s independent arts scene. Curated by founder Alexander, it became known for its inclusive, multi-disciplinary programme: stand-up and improv (including the now-iconic Secret Comedy Club), sketch and theatre, cabaret, storytelling, live music, open mic nights, jazz sessions, world and experimental performances, exhibitions and creative workshops.

By 2023, Artista had outgrown its original home and moved to a larger venue in Brighton Square. The expanded space increased capacity while preserving its intimate, community-driven feel. Today, Artista hosts a year-round programme of comedy, music, theatre, visual arts, workshops, and private/community events, from birthdays and film screenings to charity nights, meet-ups, and pop-up markets.

At the centre of Artista’s evolution is Alexander (also known as Voodoo), a photographer, musician, and long-time contributor to Brighton’s creative life. Born in Portugal and based in the UK since 1999, he studied photography and music production in Brighton, while throwing himself into the city’s nightlife as a DJ and promoter. Under the brands Voodoo Creations Photography and Alexander Fashion Photography, he built a respected career specialising in fashion, editorial, and studio work — experience that ultimately fuelled the transformation of a modest studio into one of Brighton’s most distinctive cultural spaces.

Artista’s contribution to the arts was recognised with the 2021 Brighton Fringe Audience Choice Award: Best Venue, celebrating its warmth, innovation, and vibrant cross-arts programming. Alexander’s guiding mission remains the same: to create a home for creativity where people feel inspired, supported and genuinely part of a community.

Alexander Voodoo said: “Artista has always been about creating a home for creativity, somewhere people feel inspired, supported and part of something bigger. Every laugh, every song, every piece of art adds another layer to that story. I want to build on that by hosting more workshops, art classes and exhibitions, giving artists a true home to create and connect. We’ve reopened the photo studio and are bringing cabarets and burlesque into the mix too, whilst continuing to support every part of the comedy scene, from open mics and new acts finding their voice to professional comedians honing their craft.”
