Brighton Residents and Hobbies: What are the Favourite Activities for Local Residents?

Brighton is a real melting pot of personality, so to say Brightonians all gravitate towards certain hobbies and activities would be a bold claim. However, with so much individuality, many creatives are drawn to the city, making for a huge community for artists of all kinds.

It takes just walking through Brighton to figure out what makes it tick, and by and large that is individuality and creativity. It’s no surprise then that favourite pastimes are of artistic variety.

There is no specific mode of art or creativity that captures the imagination specifically, but with so many art courses, clubs and DIY workshops, it’s whatever floats the boat for Brightonians.

Sewing, Pottery, Knitting, Every drawing/painting class you could think of, even calligraphy classes, all workshops and clubs, regularly filled with residents hoping to unwind.

Of course, some residents take to the seafront, or the beautiful cliffs with a canvas, and paint their favourite muse, the South Coast.

The Nightlife in Brighton is often another method of choice to unwind for residents here, in a city that only sleeps from 4am- 8am. There’s so much going on each night, across a multitude of bars and clubs across Brighton

It’s not just about young adults clubbing. There’s great bands playing nightly, both underground unknowns and respected names. There’s drag nights at LGBT friendly bars across Brighton, Wine tastings, Classy cocktails, comedy nights, even late night political discourse.

There’s always a performance or late night experience that will help any resident, irrespective of age unwind.

Perhaps the most common pastime that can be done year round, anytime, and whilst doing other things, is the simple act of people watching. Perhaps weird for some readers, there’s no malice in it, it’s less of a voyeuristic enterprise and more of an appreciation of others’ styles, individuality and confidence.

If life’s got you down and you find yourself stuck inside, many will go find a nice café and watch the world go by. There’s always a memorable titbit of someone else’s story to observe. It’s always uplifting to see someone so confidently express themselves, in manners you’d never see anywhere else.

A particular memory for me was sitting outside a bar and witnessing two much older ladies, surely in their 60’s on Razer mini-Scooters gunning it down ‘New Road’ without a care in the world, with no concern for what others may think. As daft as people watching as a hobby sounds, it can do wonders for your mood to appreciate the respective lives of the thousands of people you may watch go by.

Lastly, Brightonian’s are not averse to a quiet night in, in fact a lot of good can be done spent simply on your phone, decompressing with some R and R. Whether your vice is social media, bingeing Box sets, a smoke and a glass of wine or check this website for ways to lose less/win more while gambling or to gain access to amazing online casinos, Brighton residents are just like anybody else behind closed doors.
