This weekend at the nightclub Arch Theatre in Brighton, I had the opportunity to witness a powerful energy flowing through the space, emanating from Ceyda Tanc’s latest creation: Ayna.
This was not just a dance performance, it was a dynamic journey through a powerful and diverse language of expression. The incredible female cast explored ritual and the search for love, acceptance, and connection – whether human, physical, or spiritual.

The synergy between the dancers and the DJ Asta Hiroki was palpable, creating a fluid and enriching experience from start to finish. This deep connection between the space, the DJ and the dancers created an immersive and playful atmosphere. The costumes played an important role, prioritising comfort to allow the dancers freedom of movement.
The ingenious diversification of sets throughout the theatre turned the visual experience into a game. Each change of perspective offered an insight into the unfolding narrative, allowing the audience to feel part of it.

Another striking element was the projection. Here the performance transcended the physical stage and offered a glimpse of the participation of people from different generational backgrounds. The screen vibrated with a wonderful dynamic of energy and light, a harmonious blend of feminine and masculine forces that resonated deeply in the performances. The video not only complemented the live dance but extended its reach, connecting the immediate performance to a wider human tapestry.
The immersive experience was enhanced by the invitation to the audience to join the dancers on stage to enjoy the experience – it was truly a party with the power of the differents sounds.

After witnessing the power and artistry of Ayna and its unique connection with the audience, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation for what Ceyda Dance will conjure up next. This local company has clearly tapped into a rich vein of creativity, and the opportunity to witness the next step in their powerful dance work fills me with excitement. For those seeking dance that moves, inspires and connects, Ceyda Tanc is undoubtedly a company to watch.
