Hope & Ruin Brighton: Beelzebab Review

Tucked inside an iconic Brighton pub, The Hope & Ruin, you’ll find Beelzebab—a vegan junk food haven that’s been turning heads (and taste buds) since it first arrived on the scene in 2015.

Originally starting as a street food project, Beelzebab quickly found its permanent home within The Hope & Ruin, transforming the venue into one of the best spots in the city for hearty, alternative vegan eats. Nestled right in the heart of Brighton’s bustling city centre, The Hope & Ruin is known not only for its music and buzzing energy but also for its unique, quirky charm—and Beelzebab is a huge part of that vibe.

Step inside and you’re immediately transported to somewhere that feels a little bit like an Amsterdam coffee shop, a little like Berlin, and a lot like Brighton. The interior is cool, colourful, fun and mismatched in the best way possible, filled with random trinkets, furniture, and neon signs that create a warm and playful energy. It’s the kind of place where no two chairs match, and that’s exactly the point. The creative chaos works perfectly and adds to the laid-back atmosphere, whether you’re popping in for a pint or hanging out before a gig.

The bar staff deserve a special mention—not only were they super friendly and welcoming, but they were also incredibly helpful, recommending us their favourite dishes and even suggesting the perfect pint to go alongside. It made the whole experience feel personal and fun. That extra touch of hospitality really elevated our visit.

Now let’s talk about the food. Where do we even begin? Food is served seven days a week, with the kitchen open from 12pm to 9pm, so whether it’s a midday bite or an early evening feast, you’re covered. We couldn’t visit without trying one of their famous tofu hotdogs, so we opted for the Dirty Kraut Dog—and wow, what a choice. It came piled high with seitan ‘doner’ meat, chilli sauce, sauerkraut, gherkins, and the classic tofu dog as the base. It was an absolute flavour bomb—spicy, tangy, and super satisfying.

We also dug into their falafel wrap, which was fresh, hearty, and filled to the brim with salad, sauces and hummus. The loaded tater tots with chilli and sour cream were another highlight (and maybe our favourite item!) —crispy, hot, and just the right amount of indulgent. And let’s not forget the garlic bread pretzel, which was soft, chewy, and packed with garlicky goodness. Honestly, we’d come back just for that.

This isn’t fancy, over-styled vegan food—it’s junk food done right. It’s messy, delicious, comforting, and hits all the right spots. Whether you’re after a snack or a full-blown dinner, Beelzebab has something for every craving.

We’re so glad we finally got to try it out, and there’s no doubt in our minds: we’ll definitely be back.
