The Brighton Festival is currently hosting a truly remarkable experience at the Royal Theatre: Human 2.0 by Circa.
In an era often referred to as ‘Human 2.0’, where technological progress is blurring the boundaries between humans and machines, Circa stands as a potent reminder of the everlasting strength of the human spirit. It is the power of the soul that gives us that magnificent sensation of being alive.

This sentiment perfectly encapsulates what I witnessed. Ten performers take to the stage and embark on a journey that can only be described as a meticulously crafted path to something extraordinary.
Their movements are a testament to the harmony and chaos of human towers coalescing and dissolving with breathtaking fluidity. Bodies are propelled into the air and caught in a way that seems almost miraculous, pushing the boundaries of physical capability to their absolute extreme. This captivating display transcends mere acrobatics to become a profound exploration of human potential.
From the very first moments, the production’s surprising staging immerses the audience. The interplay of lights and music creates an almost trance-like atmosphere, gently guiding you into a heightened state of awareness and emotion.
Throughout the performance, I experienced a rich of emotions: sympathy for the trust displayed by the performers; a sense of lightness as they defied gravity; moments of genuine fear as they performed daring feats; and consistent awe at their artistry and skill. Above all, there was a pervasive feeling of vertigo – that visceral sensation that synchronises with your heartbeat and delivers an intense, exhilarating rush of adrenaline. It’s a feeling that reminds you of your own physical presence and capacity for wonder.
For me, this show was a profound reunion with humanity itself. It offered a fresh perspective, a rediscovery of the boundless possibilities of the human body, celebrated in all its diverse forms and shapes. Human 2.0 doesn’t just showcase physical prowess; it reveals the raw, unadulterated beauty of human connection and collaboration.
In an age often dominated by screens and digital interfaces, Circa provides a vital, tangible experience that reminds us of the profound impact of live performance and the irreplaceable magic of the human spirit. It is a show that resonates long after the final bow, leaving you with a renewed appreciation for the extraordinary capabilities that lie within us all.
