I never thought I would be witnessing this niche idea of a show, which is a cabaret featuring many types of potato. And yet I am – and I am so happy that I did! I ventured to at Revel Puck Circus’s Circus Yard on The Level to watch Moulin Bouge as part of Brighton Fringe.

At Little Puck, with its glitzy interior and glam into music, comes onto stage a sassy French woman, the compere, whose enthusiasm for all things potato comes across immediately. The French do love their fries after all. With Walkers crisp packets at the hem of her flowing outfit, she looks stunning. Or should I say spudding beautiful?
She goes on to confess her addiction to all things starchy, before introducing many acts including an acrobatic potato pizza throwing, potato juggling and a real living human potato who is ever so cute. (On the right in the left image) Then we are transported to something like a musical version of Crufts, yes, animals are in this circus. Forget elephants and tigers, a cute dog is the star of the show!

With references to Moulin Rouge with a bougie spin and Titanic with two brave audience volunteers, the performance left me feeling nostalgic to the 90s. And it also gave me a raging appetite for chips. There had to be a hula-hoop act in this cabaret and they did more than deliver that. I won’t spoil it and say what; I’ll just say that items were thrown at the audience, who loved it.

Quotes included:
“Hilarious. Give me my dinner!”
“I wanted Aunt Bessie’s roasties afterwards.”
Being an audience member of the Moulin Bouge was a sensational experience. Sacre Bleu, tres fantastique! Good luck on the rest of the shows, and keep making peeling potatoes sexy.
P.s. I even went away with a recipe.
