North By Northwest: Brighton Festival Review

North by Northwest, a Hitchcockian thrill ride, landed with grace at the Theatre Royal Brighton. The Theatre Royal was filled with playfulness, creativity, scenic excellence and sheer dynamism. The Wise Children Theatre Company’s production of North by Northwest, adapted and directed by Emma Rice and featuring a cast of six actors and a crew of around twenty people, brought the play to life.

It proved to be a captivating experience, successfully translating Hitchcock’s cinematic suspense to the stage. The production masterfully captured the film’s blend of mistaken identity and ironic humour, from the initial frantic escape to the iconic Mount Rushmore climax. This adaptation ingeniously utilised the talents of an integral cast and employed theatrical techniques ranging from physical theatre and breaking the fourth wall to improvisation. These were complemented by lighting, sound and set designs that evoked memorable scenes from the film.

The creativity on display was truly noteworthy. The actor convincingly embodied the gentle charm and growing despair of Roger O. Thornhill. The narrator allowed us to relax in our seats and laugh at the childishness of our lives. The rest of the cast brought the story to life. This play was a real delight for the audience, offering interpretations full of nuance and social context that allow a direct analogy to be made with today’s reality.

Thank you for bringing hope, humility, accuracy and beauty in simplicity to the play.
The classical architecture of the venue added to the grandeur of the performance.
The production’s pacing was expertly handled, building suspense gradually before unleashing bursts of fast-paced action.

The experience was exceptional, thanks to the overall quality of the production — the skilful adaptation, strong performances, evocative staging and enveloping atmosphere of the Theatre Royal.

As if that weren’t enough, the company’s social impact initiative enabled Brighton residents to take part in workshops for performers and technicians.

North By Northwest, adapted and directed by Emma Rice, continues its UK tour at the Liverpool Playhouse May 20 to 24, Theatre Royal Bath May 27 to 31, Everyman Theatre Cheltenham June 3 to 7, Alexandra Palace Theatre June 11 to 22.
