A Gathering of Witches At The Brunswick Bar: Review

On Thursday 21st March, I went along to A Gathering of Witches – Spring Equinox Edition

A Gathering of Witches was billed as “Brighton’s most magical poetry, spoken word and music event.” Organiser Heather and her team orchestrated a coven of words and melodies in the intimate Brunswick Bar for the Spring Equinox.

I experienced the atmosphere as charged with palpable ancestral energy, and attendees were invited to shed their masks and dive into the depths of life itself.

The evening featured performances from the Coven Choir – “Brighton’s witchiest community choir” and other voices. The performances resonated with the raw truth of existence and invoked spring with verses that were both scars and seeds of hope.

The night was free from taboos, offering a sense of resilience where themes as intimate and universal as motherhood, injustice and decorative justice, love break-ups, and the deep appreciation of our mother earth were explored. Nostalgia merged with the courage to be reborn, and it feels good this spring to want to be reborn.

With their vision and dedication, Heather and her team opened a ‘witch’s garden’, a sacred space where truth blossomed in the darkness and vulnerability was transmuted into power.

The event was a blinder in every way: the location, the intimate space, the staging, the spontaneity of the artists, and the deep connection with their words. The synergy between organisers, performers, and attendees was palpable, a communion that manifested in shared laughter, spontaneous applause, and moments of reverent silence, where the words resonated directly into my soul.

Formality dissolved, leaving space for a genuine and deep connection, an exchange of energy that transformed the event into a transcendent collective experience.

In addition, I would like to highlight the touching detail of the little piece of paper where everyone symbolically released the charges of the previous cycle to close it. It was brilliant! I wish there were more events like this. It was a pleasure to witness this magic.
