Starfish & Coffee Brighton: Best Brunch Review

There’s something quietly reassuring about Starfish & Coffee. Just up by the lovely arches of
Queen’s Park, it’s a place that truly feels rooted in its neighbourhood in a way that is
increasingly rare, even in a place like Brighton. It’s not a place that chases trends; it’s quietly assured in what it does and why people keep coming back.

We started with cappuccinos, which immediately set the bar. Well presented, comforting,
smooth and beautifully roasted; the Skylark coffee really shines through. This is coffee made and served by people who genuinely care, and it shows.

My friend ordered the Bacon Pancakes, and they were genuinely exceptional. So fluffy and soft with a slight crisp on the outside. She said they were the best pancakes she’s had since the ones her Scottish grandma used to make, which, trust me, is very high praise. They tasted
nostalgic and indulgent at the same time. Even the blueberries were noticeably fresh and full of flavour, not an afterthought you just sprinkle on, and the bacon was exactly how both of us like it: properly crispy, rich, savoury and almost melting in the mouth. Paired with the maple butter and syrup, the sweet and savoury balance was so spot on.

I went for the seasonal eggs and they were outstanding. If you love Turkish eggs like I do, this
dish will make you very, very happy. The tahini yoghurt was deeply garlicky, complemented by mellow beetroot, beautifully cooked seasonal vegetables with just the right amount of caramelisation, and perfectly charred Padron peppers. And then there were the eggs: perfectly poached with that satisfying yolk pop.

These could genuinely be the best poached eggs I’ve been served at a brunch in Brighton, or
anywhere for that matter. The flatbread was clearly fresh, warm and pillowy, perfect for scooping up the yolk and the yoghurt. Every element felt so intentional, making it elevated comfort food at its best.

The atmosphere at the cafe is what brings everything together though. The space is warm and relaxed with natural light coming in through the big windows, and it feels comfortably cosy. For warmer weather, there’s a lovely patio right outside too. It seems like a place
locals genuinely spend time in, not just somewhere people pass through. What reinforces that
feeling is how friendly and attentive the staff are, and how they are clearly invested in making
people feel welcome and ‘at home’.

Starfish & Coffee’s focus on local produce isn’t just something they talk about, it’s something
you really do taste. From the quality of the ingredients to the top-tier cooking, there’s a real
sense of care running through the whole experience.

It’s easy to see why people are willing to travel across Brighton, or further, just to brunch here.
We certainly will be doing the same.
