What’s more iconic than a Boxing Day stroll down the Brighton seafront? That crisp winter air and beautiful views of the sea are the perfect setting to clear your head after Christmas as you get into that New Year feeling. As you walk along the pebbled beach, take in the beauty of the historical West Pier and the brightly-lit Pier.

If you’re looking for a quiet place to sit, head over to the Victorian Bandstand, which often has subtle Christmas decorations that make for great photos. You can also enjoy the seafront’s Christmas lights, which extend down the coast.

For an extra treat, stop by one of the many seaside cafés to warm up with a hot chocolate or mulled wine. Make sure to wrap up warm though, as we all know how harsh that winter wind can be coming from the sea!

Explore the South Downs National Park

Boxing Day is practically synonymous with sales, and Brighton’s independent shops, including all the ones in The Lanes and North Laine, are a must-visit for any bargain hunter. These areas are famous for their boutique shops, quirky stores, and vintage boutiques. On Boxing Day, a lot of shops hold post-Christmas sales, even offering one-of-a-kind crafted items at smaller prices.

Whether you’re after handcrafted jewellery, unique clothing, vintage find or retro-esque homeware, there’s plenty to explore and find. Make sure to check individual store hours, as some may have reduced opening times during the holiday season.

Even if you aren’t looking to spend money, a festive window-shopping stroll around our lovely town will lift those possible post-Christmas blues!

After a morning of exploring the town, nothing beats a warm, hearty meal at one of Brighton’s pubs or restaurants. We truly are spoilt for choice, as there’s a variety of cosy spots to choose from.

A few we would recommend include The Lion & Lobster, known for its intimate vibes with lots of different rooms, and a little rooftop set-up, The Basketmakers Arms, a cosy local favourite in the North Laine serving up hearty Boxing Day specials, as well as Browns Brasserie & Bar for a trusty classic meal.

Many pubs will be offering special Boxing Day menus, perfect for getting a full belly after your Boxing Day adventures. From classic Christmas roasts to comforting pies and mulled wine, Brighton has something for everyone.

Visit the Royal Pavilion Ice Rink

One of Brighton’s most magical experiences during the Christmas season is skating at the Royal Pavilion Ice Rink. Set against the beautiful Royal Pavilion, skating here will feel like stepping into a proper winter wonderland. Whether you’re a seasoned skater or a beginner, it’s a lot of fun to take your family or friends to.

If you’re not quite the skater and don’t fancy hitting the ice, the rink-side café is perfect for relaxing with a hot drink and watching the skaters go by. Be sure to check session times and availability in advance, as it can get busy during the holiday period.

Lots of time slots still available for Boxing Day though! You can choose from the busier Peak times, or the Off Peak times for later in the evening.

Experience Nordic Sauna

For a unique and relaxing experience, head to a sauna on the beach. As Brightonians, we are now lucky enough to have several to choose from. Both Luna Hut and the Beach Box Sauna are located right on Brighton Beach, in the Sea Lanes. Their wood-fired saunas offer a perfect escape from the cold, giving you a soothing retreat with actual sea views.

They sometimes also offer guided rituals and relaxation sessions, ideal for de-stressing before and after Christmas.

Booking in advance is recommended, especially on Boxing Day when demand is high, but the experience is well worth it. In the event of the saunas having been already fully booked, they luckily run waiting lists.

Afterward, take a walk along the beach to fully embrace the winter chill, and grab a drink or two in a nearby pub — of which there are plenty!

Additionally, Sauna in the Lanes offers sessions to book for the 27th of December.

Attend a Theatre Performance or Pantomime

Brighton’s theatre scene is of course a highlight of the festive season, with pantomimes and special performances happening throughout December. These are a fantastic way to get into the Christmas spirit, with plenty of laughs and festive vibes for the whole family!

The biggest pantomime in town, Sleeping Beauty – The Panto of your Dreams is running from 19th to the 30th December at the Doubletree by Hilton Brighton Metropole, with a show on Boxing Day at 2pm.

It’s best to book tickets in advance as these performances often sell out quickly.

With comfy seating and a wide selection of snacks, it’s the perfect way to end a festive day out.

There are quite a few films you can see at Duke’s at Komedia this boxing day, including ones for the whole family; Moana 2, Mufasa: The Lion King and the newly released box-office hit, Wicked as well as a Boxing Day release of the highly awaited Better Man.

Roosa Herranen

From the moment she arrived in Brighton, Roosa knew this was the place to be. Her love of arts and culture, seaside living and inclusivity meant the city felt like home. When she’s not walking around town and admiring the sights, and the waves and the quirky little shops, she’s writing and creating. Originally being from Finland, there are things about Brighton & Hove that still surprise her - in the best possible way of course! After ten years in England and five of those in Brighton, she couldn’t imagine living anywhere else than here.
