Brighton Festival 2024: Everything You Need To Know

From Saturday 4th-Sunday 26th May, Brighton Festival will be back in the city for another year of displaying the most exciting new and returning talent from Sussex and beyond. With over 100 events taking place throughout the month, you’re sure to find something you’ll love at Brighton Festival.

Originally established in 1967, Brighton Festival’s first guests included iconic performances such as Laurence Olivier, Pink Floyd, and Anthony Hopkins, but has grown over the years to include both new local performers and popular international acts.

This year, some of the most prolific acts taking the stage include critically acclaimed spoken-word poet Kae Tempest on 10th May and legendary DJ Norman Jay MBE, co-founder of London music station KISS FM.

There is a huge range of different events available, from music to literature, with entertainment to suit absolutely everyone; more information is available on the Brighton Festival website.

As well as a huge variety of music events, Brighton Festival is also playing host to several debates and spoken-word events. Caroline Lucas, Brighton’s Green MP will share her new book exploring national identity with audiences on 5th May, in an example of one of the many different events taking place throughout the month.

There are also over 25 different events being hosted that cater towards young people, such as two writing workshops on the 5th of May hosted by Michelle Harrison & Alexandra Sheppard, and the Children’s Illustration Exhibition at the Book Nook running from 4th-26th May. Brighton Festival caters to all ages with its events, so be sure to check them out.

Despite the Cost-of-Living crisis forcing everybody to tighten purse strings at the moment, Brighton Festival offers a selection of free events so that those struggling can still enjoy some of what they have to offer. There are 20 different completely free events all across the city, such as film screenings, theatre performances, and art exhibitions.

At a time when so many are struggling to make ends meet, often the arts are the first industry affected. Granting access to arts to people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford them allows for wider exposure for artists, and by extension wider support.

There are over 100 events taking place over the month of the Brighton Festival, plus countless acts performing as part of the Great Escape (which is a separate festival but takes place alongside the Brighton Festival in May) and Brighton Fringe, making it one of the biggest and most exciting events in the calendar for the Southeast.

Whatever your budget and whatever you’re after, be it live music, theatre, or outdoor events, Brighton Festival has it. Head to their website as soon as possible to book tickets or for more information on any of the listed events.
