Down to Earth Coffee Is Closing Down

Down to Earth Coffee, the much-loved speciality coffee and vegan bakery known for its laid-back atmosphere and standout vegan donuts, has announced it is closing its doors.

Down To Earth had cafes at 75–76 Western Road in Hove and 11 St James Street in Kemptown and had built a loyal following. The business described itself simply as a place serving good coffee in a cosy space, “a spot to slow down, catch up, or just be”, and for many locals, that is exactly what it became.

The closure was announced by owner Joe in an emotional post on social media: “To everyone who came in for a coffee, a donut, a quiet moment, a conversation, or simply a familiar face — thank you.“

You trusted us with your mornings, your breaks, your lives, and that is something I’ll always hold close.”

Joe also paid tribute to the staff past and present, crediting their care, effort and heart as the reason the café mattered so deeply to its customers. While describing the decision to close as painful, he said he is incredibly proud of what was built and the community that grew around it.

The announcement prompted an outpouring of affection from customers, many of whom shared how much Down to Earth meant to them. One Instagram user wrote: “This is heartbreaking. Seriously the best vegan donuts I’ve ever tasted. I’m so hoping that they live on in some way, shape, or form and that the DTE staff is all well during this transition.”

Another said: “Palmeira Square isn’t the same without you. My dog still lingers in the doorway each time we pass, wondering where the dog bowl and friendly people have gone. And as for me, I loved those donuts. Thank you, Joe, for making our neighbourhood feel warmer and more connected with the love you put into Down to Earth. We miss you.”

Reflecting on the café’s legacy, Joe said the team helped people start their day feeling cared for and supported, something he truly believes made a difference. “Nothing can take that away,” he said. “We made people smile and sent people on their way feeling supported.”

He ended his message with a note of gratitude and kindness, encouraging people to look out for one another “in a world that needs it more than ever”.
