Free E-Bike Sessions Aim to Empower More Women to Cycle

Women in Brighton & Hove are being invited to take part in free e-bike taster sessions this July, as part of a new initiative to encourage more women to cycle around the city.

Supported by Beryl, the city’s bike hire operator, and Brighton Bike Hub, the sessions are designed for women and led by women. They’ll take place in Hove Park on Friday, July 4, with one session in the morning and another in the afternoon—both scheduled during school hours to make them as accessible as possible.

Each two-hour session begins and ends outside Hove Park Café and includes a free tea or coffee. Participants will also be asked to join a short focus group or survey to share their experiences and help identify what might encourage more women to cycle.

Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet Member for Transport and City Infrastructure, said:
“These taster sessions are a great opportunity for women to try out an e-bike, but also to share their thoughts on what might be stopping them from cycling more. We know fewer women hire bikes compared to men, even though the gap is smaller here in Brighton & Hove. Understanding these barriers is key to making cycling more accessible and inclusive.

“Cycling is fantastic for both physical and mental wellbeing—and a sustainable way to get around. We want to listen and learn, so we can remove obstacles and support more people in making the switch to cycling.”

Spaces are limited, and bookings must be made by 5pm on Thursday, July 3.
