Les Miserables Comes to Brighton in Amateur Première

Brighton Theatre Group has been chosen as one of just 11 amateur theatre companies across the UK to stage their own production of the legendary musical Les Misérables, as part of Cameron Mackintosh and Musical Theatre International’s “Let the People Sing” project.

This special nationwide initiative marks the 40th anniversary of Boublil & Schönberg’s beloved musical (with lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer) and will see hundreds of amateur performers take on the show for the very first time. Brighton’s production will be a collaborative effort with Brighton & Hove Operatic Society, The Rattonians, and Worthing Musical Theatre Company – uniting local talent for an unforgettable community celebration.

Producer Cameron Mackintosh said: “The success of this much-loved musical was famously made by the public – not the early critics – so what better way to enjoy this unprecedented event than to let the people sing! We’re delighted to invite these leading amateur companies to be part of our year-long celebrations.”

Brighton’s performances will take place at the Theatre Royal Brighton from Wednesday August 13 to Saturday, August 23, with 12 shows in total.

Keith Shepherd, Chairman of Brighton Theatre Group, said: “What a privilege to be involved in this wonderful project! As the last of the 11 productions in August 2025, we’re giving our local community plenty of notice – and we hope you all share our excitement about this once-in-a-generation opportunity.”
