Alphabet Brighton is a great addition to the city’s live music and cultural scene, offering a unique blend of history, high-quality sound, and an exciting lineup of events.
Located at 11 Dyke Road, Alphabet occupies a Grade II listed building originally constructed in 1867 as a school for underprivileged children. Over the decades, the venue has undergone various transformations, serving as Sloopy’s Nitespot and Discotheque in 1969, Fozzie’s Club in the 1990s, and the Rialto Theatre in 2014.
In 2023, it was redesigned as Alphabet, an audio-led venue and Hi-Fi pub, after extensive refurbishments that included restoring original features like cathedral-style windows and enhancing acoustics for live performances.
Diverse Live Performances
Alphabet’s Live Room accommodates up to 150 guests and is equipped with a high-fidelity PA system and dynamic lighting, creating an intimate yet immersive atmosphere. The venue hosts a wide selection of events, showcasing genres from jazz and post-punk to electronic and hip-hop. Exciting upcoming performances include Brighton Orchards on May 3, 2025, and Bruno Berle on May 4, 2025.
Despite its cultural significance, Alphabet faces potential challenges due to proposed residential developments adjacent to the venue. Plans to convert neighbouring offices into flats have raised concerns about noise complaints and the venue’s operational viability. Owner Will Howell has expressed apprehension, emphasising the venue’s role in Brighton’s cultural landscape and the extensive efforts invested in its restoration.
Alphabet’s ground-floor Hi-Fi pub is open Wednesday through Saturday, from 4pm until late, offering a welcoming space for gatherings. Please note that it is open for walk-ins only and private hire is available upon request.
