The Ivy In Brighton: Review

From the blossoming floral archways to the smartly waist-coated staff, The Ivy has become a byword for refined decadence and luxury in the dining world. But does this high-class restaurant live up to its glistening reputation?

I was lucky enough to discover this for myself courtesy of The Ivy in The Lanes (Brighton), where I got first-hand experience of the warmth, professionalism, and quality that is plated up for every guest who enters through that gilded entrance.

The Ivy rests in the beating heart of Brighton’s Lanes, situated in the stunning Grade II listed former post office on Ship Street. Founded in 1917, the establishment unapologetically draws upon the vibrant art-deco trend from its history while seamlessly introducing some beautifully modern touches. Expect maximalist typical artwork alongside soft cream lampshades, centered around a glorious central bar, bedecked with glistening glassware and crystal-cut mirror details.

The Experience – At The Ivy in brighton

On arrival, I was greeted warmly by the wonderfully welcoming staff and shown to my seat, tucked away in a sumptuous burnt-orange corner booth surrounded by floral arrangements and candlelit tables filled with other cheerful, relaxed diners. The staff were warm and attentive throughout my visit, offering helpful recommendations and checking in regularly.

While I perused the exceptionally enticing menu, I sipped on a Mirror Martini at the staff’s recommendation. It was light, refreshing, and expertly crafted from Belvedere Vodka, Aquavit, Cucumber Liqueur, Nettle Cordial, and a Citrus Blend. It paired perfectly with the spiced gordal olives, offering a lemon and coriander spiced warmth offset beautifully by the cooling cocktail.

In no time at all, the waiter arrived to (expertly) serve my Truffle Taglioni starter at the table; it was freshly and beautifully cooked, offering the perfect balance between rich truffle sauce and crispy cheese topping.

For my main course, I tried the Artichoke and Sweet Potato Tagine, unveiled with a flourish at my table from a terracotta tagine. Accompanied by a fruity, flavoursome harissa couscous, the Ras el hanout spiced tagine was bursting with toasted almonds, juicy olives, and smokey aubergine, as well as generous chunks of tender artichoke. The warm spice paired beautifully with the side dish I chose: a fresh tomato and coriander salad in a tangy sherry vinegar dressing.

To my surprise, the washrooms were an unforgettable part of the evening. Though they have to be seen to be believed, I can only try to do them justice by describing the shining tiled floor and columns, the pink marble sinks in each cubicle, and the red, plush, sofa-style seating. One cannot help but feel glamorous when powdering one’s nose at a softly lit, full-length mirror in a room reminiscent of both a 1920s speakeasy and an Instagram photoshoot.

While I was originally hoping to try the new cherry and pistachio nougat glacé flambé, served with raspberries and kirsch, it was regrettably sold out. Nonetheless, this led me instead to try the Ivy’s signature dessert: The Ivy chocolate bombe.

At my table, the lovely waiter poured a hot caramel sauce over a milk chocolate sphere filled with vanilla ice cream, honeycomb, and a popping candy surprise! The fusion of warm caramel, melted chocolate, and luxurious vanilla ice cream was a match made in heaven and the perfect way to round off my meal.

That is until I couldn’t resist trying a Brighton Ivy signature cocktail, the Midnight Seaside, a glass of grown-up fruitiness on the rocks, combining Slake Hedgerow Gin, Crème de Mure, Crème de Menthe, a Citrus blend, fresh blackberries, and a light elderflower tonic. Ending the experience on a Brighton branch signature drink was a really lovely touch.

The Verdict

From start to finish, I was treated with warmth, professionalism, and expertise at the Ivy, and despite the luxurious ambience, I was always made to feel at home. While dining at the Ivy may require a reasonable budget, the expense is absolutely mirrored in the quality of the food, which is fresh, flavoursome, and beautifully presented.

There are also options for more limited budgets, such as the fairly affordable set menu, offering two courses for £19.17, in homage to the Ivy’s historic past. The atmosphere, food quality, and service are truly exceptional.

So, if you’re searching for a touch of luxury and the perfect venue for an extra-special meal, romantic date, or celebration, look no further than Brighton’s Ivy in the Lanes.
