Starfish & Coffee

If you’re looking for a place to go before or after a dog walk in Queen’s Park then Starfish & Coffee is a dog-friendly independent cafe a stone’s throw away – opposite the entrance arch in fact.

One of the lovely staff at the cafe told me saying hello to the cute dogs is one of the perks of the job and I’m sure customers agree it’s one of the benefits of visiting – especially on a weekday. Water and dog biscuits are on offer for furry friends. Starfish & Coffee has a bumper brunch menu with the option to go boozy with its range of delicious cocktails.

One of the most popular options is the beautifully presented avocado smash and the cafe also has a wide range of vegan and gluten-free options. If you’re eating, don’t miss out on the vegan Chai pancakes with pumpkin and apple.

Laughing Dog

If you like shopping alongside your coffee, then dog-welcoming Laughing Dog is the perfect spot for you with its cute homeware and gift selection. I’m a sucker for a new notepad or a card to send a friend.

It’s a great pit stop if you’ve walked along the coast to the Marina and need a cosy cuppa. One of the menu highlights of this light-filled, calming cafe is the Biscoff hot chocolate. It also has a well-priced kids menu and vegan soft serve on offer.

Laughing Dog in Brighton Marina also has a resident dog born in 2023 – Chocolate Labrador Bean is its chief ambassador and even has his own Instagram account. Laughing Dog also has a branch in Worthing at 20-22 Brighton Road.

Cafe Coho

This dog-friendly cafe has two locations: Ship Street in the South Lanes and Queens Road in the North Laine near Brighton station. What’s great is if you’re out early with your pet, both branches are open every day of the week from 7 am.

This long-standing local and independent espresso bar prides itself on high-quality coffee so is great for that energy boost when you’re out with your doggy. The coffee here really is made with love so it’s a must-visit if you’re a latte art lover.

If you’re hungry there are plenty of light bites and top-notch dishes on offer, including loads of vegan options. Artisan sandwiches, cakes and treats can be found at the counter, while brunch is available from 7.30 am to 4 pm on Ship Street and all day on Queens Road.

When the weather allows, Cafe Coho has a lovely outdoor seating space on Ship Street, ideal for dogs who prefer to chill outside. There are also outdoor seats at the front of Queens Road.

T @ The Dials (and T @ Hove)

What makes T particularly popular with customers is its menu is fully vegetarian and everything on there can be made vegan and/or gluten-free. This friendly cafe, with branches at Seven Dials and Hove, also welcomes dogs and has dog treats ready to be enjoyed by our pooch pals under the table. Don’t miss the No-Tella latte and if you’re hungry, there’s nothing quite like the carbon eggs (Parmesan crisp, mmm).

T also runs the kitchen at The Prince George Pub in Trafalgar Street, which is dog friendly and does roasts on Sunday too. Keep an eye on T’s socials for details of the daily bottomless brunch, two-for-one cocktails on a Tuesday and tantalising food porn.

The fairy light-lit Tree Top Cafe opened in May 2023 and is located in the beautiful converted St Augustine’s church. Bowls of water and organic hypo-allergenic treats are on offer for dogs while owners can enjoy an all-day well-priced brunch menu including a Pick n Mix breakfast, alongside scrummy sandwiches, salads and £4 smoothies.

This one is perfect for Preston Park dog walkers as it’s just five minutes away and is also popular with families, especially after the school run. St Augustine’s Arts and Events Centre used to be a derelict, decommissioned church on the Council’s endangered list and is now a thriving event space with art on display and this welcoming, dog-friendly cafe.

Dyke Road Park cafe

What many people, including me, love about Brighton and Hove is the combination of green spaces and the sea so close together. Dyke Road Park cafe boasts sea views and is also set in a lovely park by a rose garden, the perfect relaxing spot for a tea or coffee stop on your dog walk.

Alongside teas, coffees and smoothies, this dog-friendly cafe has both a breakfast and lunch menu with highlights including Buddha bowls, which can be made with pulled pork, feta, chicken, halloumi, falafel or tofu. The marshmallow-topped hot chocolate is also quite something.

Dyke Road Park cafe also has an alcohol licence and extensive beverage offerings including cocktails so is a great place for a dog-friendly social drink.

For the pups, there are dog water bowls and staff always offer a treat. It’s worth following Dyke Road Park Cafe on socials as there are often events from DJ nights to makers markets.

Joe’s Cafe

Located in Prestonville between Hove Green and Preston Park, you can’t miss the bright and welcoming front of Joe’s Cafe. We love the traditional cafe vibes with its generous portions and fairly priced food.

This is a dog-friendly cafe that offers a range of fry ups including a great range of options for kids. What stands out about Joe’s Cafe is not only the competitive range of food and prices but also the offering of American-style brunch hashes. We love “Le Hash” with sausage, mushrooms and brie. Delicious.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome at Joe’s and must be kept on leads. This is one for the morning or lunchtime walks as it closes each day at 2 pm.
