Hassan of Unshaded Arts tells We Love Brighton about his upcoming Brighton Fringe show: Because.

Please tell us about your show:
Because is a solo show exploring the long-term impact of bullying, mortality and (undiagnosed) mental illness, centring on a character named Jade who talks to himself as a means of self-therapy. Upon hearing some unexpected news about an old school foe, also named Jade, he grapples with unresolved trauma and his world begins to unravel, seeing him at loggerheads with his most trusted voice of reason… himself.
Who is your show for?
As a theatre company, Unshaded Arts’ mission is to shine a light on universal stories driven by marginalised voices. Coupled with the themes of Because, including mental health and existentialism, the show will resonate with audiences who relate to being marginalised in some way, and / or readily support work that spotlights marginalised talent.
Research also shows that those millennials and Generation Z are more open to engaging with and discussing mental health.
Why should people come and see it?
Our intent was to create a gripping engaging drama, and find an innovative way to present a solo show; FringeReview rated the piece as being “groundbreaking work” so hopefully we have achieved that goal. The narrative both resonates with and provides a different perspective to current and recent works that home in on the mental health of Black men. Think Nouveau Riché’s For Black Boys…meets Black Swan.
Have you performed at the Fringe before?
No.
What do you love about Brighton Fringe?
This will be my first time experiencing the Brighton Fringe, and I am looking forward to contributing to such a vibrant, eclectic festival. I love that it provides a platform for artists at any stage of their career.
What do you love about Brighton?
How easy it is to get to from London! I have great memories travelling to the beach as a child in the summer, often via coach on church outings. It is an exciting, vibrant city with lots to offer. The Pier is also great fun.
