Felix and Friends In Brighton: Review

Felix and Friends, the award-winning cabaret, returned to the Walrus in Brighton on Wednesday, November 13th, 2024, and I was lucky enough to be invited along for the spectacle.

Felix Le Freak (winner of Drag Idol UK) expertly hosted a truly unique night of dazzling musical performances, storytelling, comedy, and miscellaneous queer shenanigans.

This was a grown-up’s only night in equal parts genuinely laugh-out-loud hilarious and deeply profound. Expect everything from bawdy stand-up to expert lip-synching, razor-sharp parodies of noughties game shows, storytelling, stunning vocals, and more.

November’s line-up included both top-notch local talent and renowned performers from across the country.

  • Gem the Clown (the much-celebrated winner of Brighton’s Big Drag Pageant) expertly combined clowning, drag, and burlesque in a performance equal parts comic, mesmerising, and deeply touching.
  • Nicky Vere-Compton (whose show “Freaks and Fools” was nominated for Neurodiverse Review’s “Actually Autistic Award”) had the audience hanging on and laughing at their every word.
  • Daphne dazzled us with her impeccable lip-synching skills, keeping us awed and entertained, bedecked in sequins, stage presence, and pure sass.
  • Sallyann Fellowes’s (a multi-award-winning comedian) distinctive comedy and storytelling style kept the audience captivated and laughing throughout her act.
  • Mikee Martelle (a seasoned Brighton comedian) didn’t shy away from the gory details in his bold, bawdy, and audacious tales and clearly enjoyed regaling us!

On top of these class acts, the night had a real community feel, with audience participation and a heartwarming ‘community news’ section, where 5 minutes were allocated for anyone and everyone to take the mic to share personal, local, or national news important to them; we enjoyed everything from witty one-liners, promotions for upcoming shows, and work-in-progress raps about beloved pets to a soundtrack of elevator music.

Starting in February 2025, the Felix and Friends Cabaret will be in monthly residency at the Tusk Club—usually on the first Friday of every month. Fans of drag, burlesque, comedy, and queer performance of all kinds—don’t miss out!

Address: Tusk Club, The Walrus, 10 Ship Street, Brighton, BN1 1AD
