Komedia Comedy Club Friday 9th February 2024: Review

Yearning to be surrounded by laughter, great grub and community spirit? Well then, Brighton’s most famous comedy venue is the only place to be on the weekend. Kicking off Komedia Comedy Club at 8 pm in the Komedia basement every Friday and Saturday, three professional comedians and a slick MC do their very best to get both Brighton residents and visitors laughing.

Not only do line-ups feature some well-known comedy faces, but the atmosphere is second to none, with friendly and lively audience members all up for a good time.

When Canadian MC Allyson June-Smith (insert hyperlink) strode confidently onto the stage on Friday 9th February, it was evident this was going to be another epic evening. Daring to prod at a group of men on their stag do, June-Smith showed no fear, and the ensuing hilarity proved that Komedia Comedy nights are perfect for hen and stag dos. In fact, the venue offers Party Package Tickets for groups of over 8 that include tickets, drinks and sharing platters – saving each person £9!

First up was the posh, or was he posh?, Essex comedian Milo Edwards. Combining a mixture of class-based comedy with more surreal material, Edwards ended his set with a superb bit about how the economic downturn has led to a MILF supply crisis – yes, that’s an American Pie reference, and you’ll have to go see him to find out more.

Nathan Caton continued a high-quality evening admitting he has a deep love for cardigans and is more into scented candles than sex now he’s in his 30s. Aren’t we all?

Last, but not least, Nicaraguan Chinese comic Javier Jarquin proved you can still get away with less PC material, as long as you’re funny, with great bits about ADHD, gender and accents.

Although the focus of the night is rightly on the comedians, the familiar aroma of fried chips in the air adds a more communal feel than that of many comedy venues. This is definitely a multifaceted comedy night, where you can refuel, enjoy a four-pint pitcher and laugh the working week away in a safe, wholesome environment.

Joanna Tilley

Since moving to Brighton at the start of 2022, Joanna hasn't looked back and can't imagine ever returning to the stress of London. Falling in love with the ocean and Brighton’s open and inclusive culture, it’s the kind of place that gets more and more special by the day. Comedy is her passion, and she is developing several sitcoms that will hopefully hit your screens soon.
