Larry Dean At Theatre Royal In Brighton: Review

On the 16th of November 2024, I had the absolute pleasure of seeing some of the best comedy I have witnessed in a very long time. Larry Dean performed his latest show, Dodger, at Theatre Royal in Brighton, and it was a real triumph.

Known for his sharp wit and Glaswegian charm, Larry delivered a performance packed to the brim with laughter, relatability, and his signature blend of vulnerability and slightly twisted humour.

From the moment he got on stage, Larry had the audience in the palm of his hand. As he effortlessly shared personal anecdotes while observing the crowd and getting our input, his talent for creating genuine interactions as well as an immediate connection with the entire audience was evident.

On the night, his spontaneous exchanges with members of the crowd added a fun, unpredictable energy to the show. These moments truly highlighted his natural charisma, reminding us why he’s one of the most exciting comedians on the scene today.

One of the standout aspects of Larry’s routine was his skill in tackling personal and challenging topics without losing the light-hearted essence of comedy. The show wove through themes of identity, family, and relationships, often delving into moments of deep introspection, only to flip them into punchlines that left us roaring with laughter.

Whether he was reflecting on private moments between him and his grandmother, his relationship experiences, or queer culture, his storytelling felt authentic and hilariously relatable.

The show’s pacing was spot-on, with Larry building momentum through beautifully crafted setups and delivering brilliantly timed punchlines. His delivery was sharp, seamlessly moving between dry humour, self-deprecation, and playful impersonations… Elvis impersonations, to be exact.

Dodger by Larry Dean is a masterclass in stand-up, combining heartfelt storytelling with immaculate, razor-sharp comedy. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to his work, this show offers a lovely mix of humour and heart that’s impossible not to enjoy.

As the night came to a close, it was clear from the huge applause that Larry had proven his place on the circuit… as if being thrice Edinburgh Comedy Award-nominated and a two-time star of Live At The Apollo wasn’t enough!

If you get the chance to see Larry, don’t hesitate—this show, his natural charm, and his beautiful take on the vulnerable stand-up routine are just beautiful.
