The Mesmerist

A lively and eccentric bar found in Brighton’s Lanes, The Mesmerist is a guaranteed good time no matter the occasion. Open until 2 am on Fridays and Saturdays, they have the choice of four bars over three floors that all have something special to offer.

On their main bar downstairs is a vast and impressive array of spirits (including flavoured gins) and a huge selection of Laine’s beers, and a DJ plays non-stop crowd-pleasers right until closing time.

Their 70’s inspired cocktail lounge, the Flipside, is located on the first floor, where you can enjoy any of the expertly crafted cocktails on the Mesmerist’s impressive menu, be it a classic or one of their unique original drinks.

During the summer, there is no place better to spend the evening than their rooftop bar, which has a DJ every Saturday and is adorned with multicoloured lights that create an ambient and charming space. Whatever you’re looking for from a night out, chances are the Mesmerist has it and has long been a favourite among Brighton residents and tourists alike.

Black Lion

Black Lion is a pub with a history reaching back over 500 years and has long been one of Brighton’s most popular pubs. They have a spacious yet cosy interior and a huge range of spirits and draught beer, including Laines IPAs as well as popular premium lagers.

They have also just launched a brand new cocktail menu that includes several classics plus some unique additions. They open until 3 am every Friday and Saturday with DJs playing both nights, and regularly host live music on other nights of the week.

As well as all this, Black Lion’s impressive beer garden is the perfect space to chat when you need a break from the excitement inside. If the perfect late-night pub exists, Black Lion would surely be an example of one.

The Bootlegger

Found only a stone’s throw from the beach, this 1920s-inspired bar claims to be the place for a “raucous good night”. The exposed brick and Edison bulb-lit interior certainly cultivate the feeling that you stepped back one hundred years ago, as well as making the venue feel cosy, intimate, and welcoming.

Alongside the typical range of draught beers, wines, and spirits one might expect to find in a bar, The Bootlegger also boasts an impressive cocktail menu, including classics that you’d have expected to find in a real 1920s bar, as well as the most recent and exciting drinks, all made by their talented bartenders.

They play host to regular live music and DJ nights, and with a 3 am closing time on Friday and Saturday & 2 am the rest of the week, The Bootlegger is the perfect place to enjoy a big night out in Brighton.

The Hop Poles

Themed nights, such as UV parties and emo nights, and DJs are a regular occurrence at this alternative little bar, with the downstairs area transforming into a buzzing yet intimate dancefloor.

East Street Tap is open until 3 am on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and until 2 am the rest of the week, making it the ideal destination when going for a ‘quiet drink’ escalates. This pub is a favourite of many Brighton residents both young and old, and after a visit, it won’t be hard to see why.

Legends

It wouldn’t be a proper list of recommended Brighton late-night bars without the edition of an LGBTQ+ safe space, and the iconic LGBT venue Legends ticks all the boxes here. Open until 4 am every single day, this venue has more to offer than initially meets the eye.

The ground floor bar is a welcoming and open social space to catch up with friends and get to know new people, with an exciting and friendly atmosphere. On weekends, however, Legends opens up its ‘Basement Club’ until the early hours of the morning, with their resident DJs playing queer anthems and crowd-pleasers that are sure to appeal to everyone, no matter how they identify.

That isn’t all Legends has to offer, though, as they frequently host cabaret events, live music, and drag queens, meaning that you’re sure to be entertained no matter what. With a massive range of both house and premium spirits alongside their draught beer and wine selection, one visit will make it easy to see how Legends has gained its icon status.

Bohemia

Bohemia is perhaps one of the grandest bars in Brighton and it just happens that it is open till late at night throughout the week. This European-style venue has a gorgeous, exposed brick interior that combines traditional with modern in a tasteful way and a gorgeous roof terrace for warmer weather.

Their cocktail menu is one of the most impressive around, with a couple of classics that have been perfected and made to the highest standard, alongside a huge range of original in-house creations that will blow you away. If you don’t fancy a cocktail, however, they also offer a good range of beers, wines, and spirits.

From Sunday to Thursday, Bohemia opens until 1 am, transforming into a stylish late lounge by night and hosting live music on Thursday nights. On Friday and Saturday, though, they open their doors until 3 am, turning into an old-school yet classy nightclub for over-25s, with their DJs playing a mixture of throwback and current favourites sure to please everyone in the crowd. Bohemia is a truly unique late-night venue and a great choice for anyone after a slightly more high-end experience.

The Mash Tun

The Mash Tun, more commonly referred to by locals as simply ‘Mash’, is one of Brighton’s best-known late-night pubs. Open until 3 am on Friday and Saturday and until 2 am for the rest of the week, this quirky pub has long been a favourite among Brighton’s student population, something only encouraged by their generous drink deals on selected beer, wine, spirits, and shots.

The intimate downstairs area of Mash, lit by their iconic red LED strip lights, becomes a lively dancefloor every evening, with DJs playing on selected nights multiple times a week to keep you dancing for as long as possible. Mash frequently also plays host to themed nights, one of their most popular ones this year celebrating the release of the Barbie movie. Mash is a guaranteed great night out no matter what, and the perfect place to dance the night away.

When I think of late-night bars in Brighton my first thought is always Molly Malones. This is Brighton’s premier Irish pub, offering an authentic and lively experience. With live music gracing the stage seven nights a week, this is the perfect pub for a late-night party.

Sports enthusiasts can cheer on their favourite teams as Molly Malone showcases all live Gaelic games and the Rugby World Cup on both Sky Sports and BT Sport.
