Not in the mood for airport queues or the stress of travel logistics? Whatever your reason, staycations have become a go-to for many of us, especially if you’re looking to unwind without the hassle and for a fraction of the cost. But it isn’t about simply staying at home more than it’s about making the most of your surroundings, discovering new experiences on your doorstep, and, if you’re lucky, getting a little bit creative with how you relax.
As a parent, I’ve learned that finding ways to turn “home time” into something special for the whole family is key. Here are five fantastic ways to properly staycate (is this even a word? Well, it is now!), so you can truly enjoy your time off.
Say hello to our great outdoors
The UK is blessed with some of the most beautiful natural landscapes, and there’s no reason why you can’t take advantage of this from the comfort of your home – I mean, staycation. From the rolling hills of the Cotswolds to the rugged coastline of Cornwall, a walk through one of our national parks can give you that much-needed change of scenery. Even a local park can be transformed into a mini-adventure, perfect for a family picnic or a leisurely stroll. If you’re looking to stretch your legs, check out our national parks!
Try a unique accommodation
If you’re looking to up the ante, why not book a unique stay? And by unique, I mean anything from a quirky treehouse to a stylish glamping pod. Imagine waking up to the sound of birds in the middle of the woods! Or spending an evening in a yurt with no Wi-Fi – just you, the family, and a nice bottle of wine.
Nothing is stopping you from getting a bit more permanent, though, especially if you know how much potential a home-made holiday can have. You could opt for a coastal retreat and buy a static caravan in North Wales, where the views alone will make you forget about work and life’s other distractions. Or head to the picturesque Jurassic Coast in Dorset? With its stunning cliffs and quiet beaches, it’s the perfect spot for a peaceful escape. If you prefer a countryside setting, why not consider a holiday home in the heart of the Peak District?
Redesign your home for a holiday vibe
Now hear me out. Staying at home doesn’t mean you can’t create an immersive holiday experience. Ever thought about giving your home a makeover? A quick rearrange, a fresh coat of paint, or adding some new cushions can do wonders for transforming the feel of your space. You could even take it further and create themed rooms for a more luxurious atmosphere! How about a spa day in your bathroom or turning the living room into a home cinema with popcorn and a blanket fort?
Get creative in the kitchen
And then there’s the food. Let’s be honest, a staycation is the perfect opportunity to indulge in cooking without the pressure of preparing meals for the week. Why not try something new, like cooking a cuisine you’ve never attempted before? You can even bring the kids into the kitchen to learn a few family recipes or join an online cooking class for a bit of fun. Maybe a themed dinner night or a fresh take on a traditional British meal?
Culture from your couch
Finally, while you’re staying at home, why not make use of the endless cultural resources available at your fingertips? Many museums, galleries, and theatres are offering virtual tours or streaming performances, so you don’t need to miss out on cultural experiences just because you’re at home. Spend an afternoon exploring the British Museum from your sofa or attend a live theatre stream – there are plenty of ways to experience the best of British culture without leaving your home.
