The Importance of the Early Years

A child’s immune system is not fully developed at birth. In the first few years of life, their natural defences are still maturing. This makes young children more susceptible to infections. By establishing good nutrition, hygiene and lifestyle habits, you can help boost your child’s immunity and set them up for better health.

Diet and Nutrition

Diet plays a major role in immune health. Provide your child with a balanced, nutritious diet packed with immune-boosting foods. Each colour represents a family of protective phytochemicals.

Avoid excessive sugar and processed foods, which can suppress immunity.

Sleep and Physical Activity

Sleep and exercise both influence immune function. Young children need 10-13 hours of sleep per night for optimal health, growth and immunity. Set consistent bedtimes and pre-sleep routines to help establish good sleep habits. Make sure your child’s bedroom promotes quality rest – keep it cool, dark and quiet. Restrict screen time before bed.

Hygiene Habits

Good hygiene limits the spread of viruses and bacteria. Teach your child how and when to wash their hands properly – after using the toilet, before eating, after touching animals, etc. Coughing and sneezing into elbows rather than hands also reduces infection transmission.

However, children also need exposure to benign microbes to train their immune system. Let them play outdoors and get a bit dirty rather than being overly sanitary. Avoid using antibacterial soaps and cleaning products, which can disrupt the microbiome. Keep vaccinations up to date for protection from serious diseases.

Managing Stress

Chronic stress and anxiety weaken the immune response, so cultivating your child’s emotional well-being is beneficial. Give them a sense of safety, security and belonging. Be attentive to their needs. Set aside quality one-on-one time to connect. Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing when they feel worried. Promote positive coping skills from a young age.
