How is OpenAI Personalising its ChatGPT offering?

Towards the end of 2022, ChatGPT exploded into the public consciousness. Capable of providing answers to the most random of questions within a matter of seconds across every subject imaginable, the chatbot was an instant worldwide success. Users grew initially, and since then, an optional subscription has been introduced, giving paid users even more features. In this article, we’re going to look at the efforts of OpenAI to personalise the offering to members.

Catering to the customer

In a world with a plethora of information available at our fingertips, personalisation has become increasingly important, no matter the industry. Take online casinos, for example. Companies such as Buzz Bingo have recently partnered with artificial intelligence firms to improve their offering. The company provides customers the chance to play online casino slots as part of their online services, which gives users the chance to play a range of themed slot games. However, in an effort to improve the user experience, Buzz Bingo is partnering with Future Anthem to provide more personalisation for their audience. It’s hoped that this AI integration can offer real-time personalised insights, which will improve customer retention and company profitability. This sort of partnership is growing across industries.

Has ChatGPT Personalised its Offering?

Halfway through 2023, OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, announced that it would be aiming to personalise its chatbot. A common complaint from users revolved around inputting the same question or background information over and over when using the chatbot. To combat this, OpenAI now allows paid users to input custom instructions that the software will consider when answering questions. An example of this could be a chiropractor creating instructions for exercises. Rather than writing some background information each time, they can save it, and the chatbot will remember it going forward.

What Can Users Expect in the Future?

In short, more and more personalisation. Initially, ChatGPT was released as a general model, one that could suit a wide range of needs. As well as allowing users to save custom instructions, ChatGPT also allows paid users to create and upload their own chatbots. Users can make any sort of chatbot they wish – funny, serious, informative, and upload it to an OpenAI version of an app store for other users to download and use. If the chatbot performs well, then users can make money from it. It is in its very early stages currently, but it is surely just a sign of things to come from OpenAI.

The future of chatbots and artificial intelligence is growing rapidly and ChatGPT has undoubtedly contributed to this pace. According to a recent report by DataHorizon, the chatbot industry is currently worth over $4 billion. However, the same study indicates the industry will grow by eight times in the next decade, to $32 billion.

The movie Her (2014), where the protagonist falls in love with an AI system, offers a glimpse into the power of the technology. For those invested in the future developments of the AI industry, as well as it’s ethical considerations, it’s well worth a watch.
