Magda Archer X The Private Press Live Screenprinting In Brighton: Review

Nestled in the heart of Brighton on North Road, Helm Gallery is a new and modern arts and exhibition centre spread over two floors, hosting fabulous art exhibitions, a rotating selection of carefully curated pieces, as well as a large exhibition hall for classes, experiences, workshops and shows.

The bright, open and spacious art gallery is also home to a coffee area by day, and a cocktail bar by night, offering the perfect beverages to enjoy while you take in the art, or enjoy a regular scheduled event.

From the 9th of November to the 24th of December 2023, Helm Gallery in Brighton is home to a solo show: ‘I Don’t Know’ by Magda Archer. This contemporary mixed-media exhibition is free to enter and consists of both never-before-seen pieces and classic archival works.

Archer’s exhibition aims to embrace, rather than shy away from uncertainty and offers striking and eclectic work in bold colours, often married with witty and unexpected text.

The exhibition is also accompanied by a variety of art-based events and releases, including an exclusive poster zine, the chance to obtain some advanced copies of her as-yet-unreleased lyric book with IDLES, and a live screen-printing workshop.

On Saturday 2nd December, The Private Press brought their screenprinting station to the gallery, allowing visitors to create their very own version of Archer’s ‘Super Dork Art’ print. Having never done any printing before, the technique was surprisingly accessible, under Gary’s expert guidance, and I was proud of my creation!

I then had the opportunity to soak up the artwork, and even chat to Archer herself!

This event was a great way to appreciate the artwork, learn a new skill, and meet the artist herself. What could be better?
