The Mesmerist

The Mesmerist is one of the most unconventional bars in the South Lanes in Brighton. The name was inspired by Franz Mesmer, an 18th-century physician who believed in the power of hypnotism and suggestion. The venue was inspired by 1930s gin palaces, burlesque and the steampunk movement, and they strive to celebrate the best of eras gone by.

As you step through the doors of The Mesmerist, you are transported to a bygone era. The decor is a fusion of Victorian steampunk and retro chic with plush leather seating, ornate chandeliers, and walls adorned with vintage artwork.

The Mesmerist is made up of three floors with individually styled rooms and a rooftop garden which has its own bar. They have a 70s-inspired cocktail lounge called “The Flipside,” where you can enjoy expertly crafted cocktails that pay homage to the iconic drinks of that era, but with a Mesmerist twist.

The Mesmerist offers an impressive cocktail menu and they are renowned for their selection of absinthe, an intriguing drink with a rich history. Their menu features classic pub food, including a legendary Sunday roast and bottomless brunch served every Saturday. UmamiNation also serves food from their kitchen, bringing a fusion of Asian flavours to Western pub classics.

They support live music, with a jam-packed schedule of artists playing throughout the week, mainly showcasing vintage and revival-inspired acts. Weekend evenings are hosted by their resident DJ, spinning vintage classics and boutique rarities.

The Mesmerist is open daily from 12 p.m. until 12 a.m. on most days and until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Whether you’re visiting Brighton as a tourist or you’re a local resident looking for a unique night out, The Mesmerist is a must-visit destination – and what’s more, dogs are more than welcome!
