The ins and outs of Brighton’s transfer window

It’s been another busy summer at the American Express Stadium, with Brighton & Hove Albion once again living up to their reputation as one of the smartest operators in the transfer market.

For fans eyeing up the new campaign and looking to get involved with free football bets, the Seagulls’ latest recruitment drive is worth analysing closely.

Fabian Hürzeler may have lost some key names, but as always, the south coast club have looked to the future with shrewd signings and exciting potential.

Arrivals

Charalampos Kostoulas was this summer’s headline signing. The 18-year-old Greek forward joined for £30 million and is widely seen as a long-term replacement for Joao Pedro, who left for Chelsea.

While Kostoulas has shown flashes of ability in the early stages of his career, Hürzeler has been cautious, suggesting the youngster needs time to adapt before being thrown into the Premier League spotlight.

Maxim De Cuyper, signed from Club Brugge for £17.5m, adds valuable international experience to the squad. The Belgian left-back has already been capped 10 times by his country, bringing both defensive stability and attacking thrust.

Brighton also dipped into the domestic market, landing 18-year-old Tom Watson from Sunderland for £10m. Watson looks set to develop within the Seagulls’ system rather than heading out on loan, and his debut goal in the 6-0 EFL Cup win over Oxford United showed the potential Brighton are investing in.

Defensive reinforcements arrived in the form of Diego Coppola, a £9m capture from Hellas Verona. The 21-year-old impressed in his early outings, contributing both a clean sheet and an assist in the EFL Cup.

South Korean starlet Yoon Do-young was another intriguing signing, arriving for £2m but immediately heading on loan to Excelsior in the Eredivisie, where he’s already off the mark with a goal.

Finally, Olivier Boscagli arrived on a free transfer from PSV. The versatile defender can operate both at centre-back and left-back, and while he has yet to feature in the Premier League, his goal against Oxford highlighted his ability to contribute at both ends.

Departures

The most eye-catching exit was Pedro’s, who sealed a £60m move to Chelsea. The Brazilian wasted no time making his mark at Stamford Bridge, scoring in both the semi-final and final of the Club World Cup, helping the Blues lift the trophy, and hitting the ground running in the Premier League.

Simon Adingra also moved on, joining Sunderland for £21m. Bought for just £8m in 2022, the Ivorian winger proved another example of Brighton’s buy-low, sell-high philosophy. Meanwhile, Pervis Estupiñán’s £17m transfer to AC Milan marked the end of a successful spell at the Amex, with the Ecuadorian left-back now seeking new challenges in Serie A.

Valentín Barco and Julio Enciso both left for Strasbourg, a club within the BlueCo network alongside Chelsea. The deals will give Enciso a possible route to Stamford Bridge in the future. Elsewhere, Abdallah Sima (Lens), Kjell Scherpen (Union SG), and Odeluga Offiah (Preston) also moved on in permanent or loan deals.

Once again, Brighton have proven they are unafraid to part with established stars if the price is right. But true to form, they’ve reinvested cleverly in young, high-upside talent. While the likes of Kostoulas and Watson may take time to fully flourish, the blend of youthful promise and experienced additions such as De Cuyper ensures the squad retains balance.

The Seagulls’ strategy is well established, and while there may be short-term growing pains after losing players like Pedro and Estupiñán, history suggests fans should trust the process. The ins and outs of this summer may not grab headlines like a blockbuster signing, but they fit Brighton’s identity perfectly.
