Review: The Flour Pot Bakery — Fiveways

On a crisp autumn Saturday in Brighton, my friend and I hopped on a bus to The Flour Pot Bakery in Fiveways. We had a clear agenda: brunch. The Flour Pot’s new brunch menu is out, and we needed to try it.

Already a popular spot for the Fiveways locals, their reputation for quality pastries and great coffee has been out there, and as fans of their other locations, we were keen to see what the new brunch menu looked like. As soon as we walked in, we were welcomed by warm servers and a bustling floor (well, two, as this location has two levels).

We kicked the brunch off with mimosas and a cappuccino, both absolutely lovely. The mimosas were refreshing, with just the right balance of citrus and fizz. The cappuccino, rich and creamy, was exactly what I needed to truly get my day going.

Our selection of brunch goodies didn’t disappoint either. We opted for three things to share, as we couldn’t quite decide with the menu so full of all kinds of deliciousness.

First up, the veggie hash, which turned out to be a brilliant choice. It was hearty and flavoursome with a small kick, including well-seasoned potatoes, tomatoes, and halloumi, and topped with a perfectly fried egg.

The combination of textures, from crispy potatoes to the runny yolk, made every bite feel like a comforting hug. The only way this could’ve been more delicious would’ve been if I’d had a few mimosas the day before as well.

We also shared a Croque Monsieur, which was as decadent as you’d hope. The layers of ham and melted cheese between the perfectly toasted, thick bread were perfection, with a creamy béchamel sauce bringing it together.

Our commentary flowed at each bite, mostly telling each other how these really looked and tasted like quality ingredients! As a dish, it was rich but not overwhelming, making it a great choice for those after something more savoury. You will want to come hungry though, since this was filling!

For our pudding, we shared a French toast croissant, and to be honest, I’m at a bit of a loss for words with this one… I mean, indulgent is the word. A perfect twist on the classic French toast. Sweet, flaky, buttery

It came with a lovely portion of fresh berry compote and whipped cream—such a satisfying blend of all things fresh, delicious, and decadent, with the croissant giving you a unique base compared to the usual bread you get with French toast.

The service throughout our afternoon was exceptional. Despite the café being busy, the staff were attentive, friendly, and quick to help with any requests, which we had a couple of. I also loved being able to see into the kitchen from where we were sitting, watching the chefs work their magic.

We had also brought our four-legged friend with us, and it was super lovely to see how dog-friendly their space was—our doggie was welcomed with open arms, making the experience all the more awesome.

In terms of the overall vibe, The Flour Pot Bakery at Fiveways is both cosy and vibrant. The space is bright, spacious, and lively, making it perfect for anything from a casual coffee catch-up to a long brunch with friends. Situated in the heart of Fiveways, it’s very easy to see why the locals seem to love it.

Overall, The Flour Pot Bakery’s new brunch menu is a huge success. With great food, a welcoming atmosphere, and excellent service to top it off, I think it’ll continue to be just that.

Whether you’re a Brighton local or just passing through, this is a spot definitely worth visiting, and we can confidently say that it’s one of the best bakeries in the city.
