Music Of The Lord Of The Rings – A Tribute To Howard Shore: Review

Mystery Ensemble’s tribute to Howard Shore’s The Lord of the Rings score at the Royal Pavilion’s Music Room was nothing short of magical; a true highlight of the month for me!

Their performance captured exactly what Howard Shore’s music is about, taking us all straight into the heart of Middle-earth. Whether you were sitting in that room as a fan of The Lord of the Rings or as a general music fan, you were guaranteed to be touched by every note. The intimate setting of the Music Room gave the orchestra the perfect atmosphere for such an immersive experience.

As true masters of their instruments, Mystery Ensemble delivered the iconic score, from the beautiful and hopeful “The Shire Theme” to the heart-wrenching “The Breaking of the Fellowship.” Each piece was played with so much skill and passion, allowing everyone in the audience to relive key moments from the film, just drifting away with the music.

It all came together beautifully, with no section overpowering another. What brought me the most joy was seeing their interactions and seamless collaboration, the little smiles, nods, and enthusiasm between the performers.

In addition to their amazing communication, the musicians’ ability to bring out so much emotion through the music was striking. They stayed balanced while showing the peace of the Shire with the beautiful contrast of the darker, more intense battle scenes, all the way through the 60-minute performance.

Overall, the ensemble’s efforts ended up being a stunning tribute to Shore’s work, delivering a good dose of nostalgia and power. A memorable experience for fans of the films, yes, but anyone who sat in the audience would have left the gorgeous Royal Pavilion with either teary eyes or a smile on their face.

When she’s not walking around town and admiring the sights, and the waves and the quirky little shops, she’s writing and creating. Originally being from Finland, there are things about Brighton & Hove that still surprise her - in the best possible way of course! After ten years in England and five of those in Brighton, she couldn’t imagine living anywhere else than here.
