Fruitcake At The Actors: Brighton Fringe Review

There’s something quite wonderful about being able to pop into a pub theatre for 35 minutes early evening on a Wednesday and watch a heartfelt one-person show before pootling off for the next adventure. And that’s the joy of the short production that is Fruitcake, which showed at The Actors on Tuesday, May 6 and Wednesday, May 7 at 6pm as part of the Brighton Fringe.

Fruitcake Productions’s Jaimee Doyle was likeable and charming as Fruitcake as they embarked on a one-person show in a heartwarming coming of age story with many twists and turns. Jaimee was captivating and engaging in the way they held the audience’s attention in this creative production of a moving and mysterious love story.

There was a great vibe in the cosy Actors theatre space, upstairs above the edge-of-Kemptown pub, with the audience chuckling at some witty one liners.

It’s great to see this Australian-born theatre company taking root in the UK – this time at the Brighton Fringe. Jaimee Doyle (They/Them) founded Fruitcake Productions in 2022 and is a queer theatre maker, actor and writer, born and raised in Naarm/Melbourne and now based in London.

Fruitcake Productions is “committed to showcasing compelling and previously untold stories on stage. Our mission is to nurture new theatre makers, celebrate diverse voices and create amazing theatre.”

Fruitcake was originally performed as a part of the One-Act Play Festival and 2024 Melbourne Fringe Festival. Keep an eye out for Fruitcake Productions and what they do next in their UK chapter.
