I’ve been meaning to attend a Sofar Sounds show for a long time; hence, when the opportunity showed up to attend the show in Central Brighton on the 13th December 2024, I seized it just in time to get myself in the mood for Christmas.
Firstly, the concept of the Sofar Sounds shows is quite interesting in that they reveal the location only around 36 hours in advance, and the shows usually take place at a cosy spot offering an intimate experience.
Sofar Sounds: 13th December 2024 in Brighton
This particular show took place at Fabrica, one of my favourite venues across the city. This quaint refurbished church on Duke Street seemed like the perfect place to host a Christmas musical gig with its high ceilings and a beautiful raised platform, which would act as the stage for the performers.
Secondly, as the organiser described while introducing the audience to the acts, the range and variety of the performances are incredible. This time we had Nina Kohout, whose haunting yet enchanting tunes and powerful range of voice enthralled us. In only a few songs, she explored themes of anger, hurt, and joy in the most musically invigorating way that left me stunned. Since seeing the live performance, I have become a fan of electronica and look forward to hearing more of her tunes.
The next performer was jazz/soul artist Steven Bamidele. His original songs, as well as the cover of the famous Sam Cooke classic, ‘A Change is Gonna Come,’ left the audience swaying to the soothing acoustics.
The final act was by Ever Elysian, a three-person ensemble whose vocals, acoustic, and electric guitar created a warm ambience in the already-welcome embrace of the church. In the spirit of Christmas, they also played a Joni Mitchell cover, which presented us with an alternative, calmer transition into the festive spirit than you would find elsewhere.
The concert was beautifully coordinated by welcoming staff and a fun organiser and host who also interspersed the acts with a quick Christmas-themed quiz for music lovers.
If you’re looking for alternative ways to experience new and fresh music across unique locations, I would highly recommend giving Sofar Sounds a try. Be sure to check out our review of the show that took place in August 2023 at Pizza Pilgrims.
