Sofar Sounds is a unique events company which transforms everyday spaces, like rooftops or art galleries and turns them into intimate and warm venues for secret live performances. We’re lucky that Sofar Sounds hosts events in Brighton!
For £16 you get a ticket to a gig with an unknown location and about 36 hours before, the location is revealed, yet you are still unaware of who will be performing until you get there or check your emails before the event (but we recommend keeping it a total surprise).
The Experience: Sofar Sounds Brighton
Once I arrived I was welcomed to a beautiful room situated in the Bison Beach Bar, which was lit by fairy lights and candles creating a cosy and intimate ambience. Sofar events typically feature three diverse acts with no headliner; Izzie Derry, Alfie Weedon and Rob Clamp were the acts of the night and it is apparent Sofar has an eye for talented, underground artists.
Each artist had their own style and was able to hold the room with their amazing musical skills. The music was beautiful and all acts had a similar warm and impactful presence, while also having unique differences in their performances which kept the night engaging and exciting.
The room was packed yet felt spacious as we were all entranced by the performances and shared what felt like a special experience. All the chairs were taken leaving people to sit on the floor, however, they were evidently prepared as they brought cushions, which added to the intentional intimate and cosy atmosphere.
You could feel a real connection between each of the artist and the audience, with the audience being respectful and welcoming as they gave the acts their full attention; I believe the nature of the event attracted this sort of crowd, as we were all there to appreciate the art and power of music.
Despite the calm and respectful presence of the audience, they were still very involved, for example, Rob Clamp asked us to help him sing one of his songs which the crowd did not shy away from, creating an upbeat and immersive experience.
The event lasted around 2 hours with 10-minute intervals between each act, during which people made their way to the bar next door which was open giving the audience a chance to grab a drink and socialise while anticipating the next performance.
At the end of the night, there was the opportunity to buy merch and it was also encouraged to follow the acts on social media to continue supporting them. Overall it was a beautiful, intimate and enjoyable experience and I will be attending another.
