Sussexsport
It’s been a long time since we’ve heard of a gym membership under £20 and incredibly the student membership at the University of Sussex starts from £12.08 per month for silver (£145 for the year).
Facilities at Sussexsport include a weightlifting room with four platforms, a strength and conditioning room with a bespoke multi-purpose training rig, cable machines, assault bikes, spin bikes and dumbbells from 2-30kg.
There’s also a cardio room and a resistance room with a matted area and a range of Life Fitness equipment. The InBody machine, where you can track progress with body composition analysis, fat mass and muscle mass measurements, is free for all members to use. The hairdryers in the changing room and shower area are also free to use.
Students can choose from gold, silver or monthly group fitness. Bronze membership is free to students and means students can pay-as-you-go. There are more than 30 weekly classes to choose from from aerial yoga to Boxercise.

Freedom Leisure: Withdean Sports Complex
What’s great about a Freedom Leisure membership is it gives access to all seven sites in Brighton and Hove; King Alfred Leisure Centre, Withdean Sports Complex, Prince Regent, Stanley Dean Leisure Centre, Moulsecoomb Community Leisure Centre, Portslade Sports Centre and Hassocks Sports Centre. That includes three swimming pools to choose from.
For students, a swim-only membership is £28 a month and gym, swim and classes membership is £35.95 a month, with a three-month minimum contract. A student full membership includes a personalised fitness programme, five 1-2-1 Fitness Coaching Sessions, access to booking 14 days in advance, a choice of 100+ group exercise classes a week, discounts on court and pitch bookings and discounts from local partners in Brighton and Hove.

SportBrighton
University of Brighton’s offering starts at £17 a month for current students and current staff can get a £21 a month membership. Members of the public can get a community membership for £28 a month.
There’s a swimming pool at the Eastbourne campus, with a pool planned for 2024 as part of new facilities at the Falmer campus in Brighton. Moulsecoomb and Falmer have a range of classes throughout the day seven days a week including full-body burn and yoga.

PureGym
If you want a good range of equipment and plenty of kit, then PureGym is usually a good bet if you’re looking for budget gyms in Brighton. What might suit a student lifestyle is the fact most PureGyms are open 24/7.
Students get up to 30% off the membership price at PureGym and there are two Brighton options – Brighton Central in North Road (£13.30 a month) and Brighton London Road (£14). If you go on the PureGym website you can take a 360-degree tour of the facilities to choose the best one for you.
Fitness classes are included in memberships with some starting as early as 7.30 am and running as late as 8 pm. To qualify for student offers, you’ll need to take on a fixed term.

The Gym
The Gym is another good budget option nationwide and the benefit of PureGym and The Gym is you can choose to have more than one gym on your membership so you could have one for your university town and one for home for the holidays.
The Gym group offers a student membership from £143 for nine months so that’s £15.89 a month. Again, The Gym is open 24/7 and the brand sells this to students with the phrase “Turn late night swotting into late night squatting”.
What’s great about this gym is you can choose unlimited access to two gyms, which could mean Brighton and Hove branches or could also work for any student during term-time in Brighton and home for the holidays. There are branches of The Gym at Madeira Drive, London Road and Blatchington Road in Hove. Student membership includes unlimited classes.

PHX Gym
If you like a gym that opens at 5 am on weekdays and offers no contract then PHX in Hollingbury could be the one for you. This 12,000 sq ft space has cardio equipment including treadmills, bikes, cross trainers, stairmasters and ecoline cardio machines. There’s also free parking.
