The benefits of being outside aren’t in doubt. Fresh air and exercise can boost your immune system, improve your sense of well-being, and increase the production of endorphins (the happy hormones). And who doesn’t want to combine that with some exploring, adventure, and a touch of luxury, comfort, and style? And Sussex Glamping has everything you want from a glamping holiday, whether it’s a super active mini-break or a holiday that’s completely different from what you’re after.
Why go glamping in Sussex and what are the best spots?
Sussex has hundreds of miles of coastline that includes dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches, and good old-fashioned piers with slot machines and candyfloss. It’s also home to the rolling line of hills of the South Downs.
The South Downs National Park covers well over 1,500 square kilometres and includes walking and cycling routes perfect for all abilities, whether you’re a family out on the bikes together or a serious trail cyclist.
But you’ll also find mediaeval castles, vineyards, hopelessly pretty villages, harbour towns, and a vibrant cultural scene that includes art galleries, festivals, and museums. There are lots of glamping sites in Sussex, but for the wow factor, these are our top six.
Silver Airstream | 1950s-style Airstream glamping with hot tub and fire pit. |
Skoolie Stays | Off-grid glam in a refitted American school bus near Storrington. |

The Garden House | Explore the South Downs with a relaxing stay in a Mongolian Yurt. |
Heavenly Hoots | Romantic treehouse retreat near Mayfield with wood burner and treetop balcony. |
Silver Airstream, Chichester
Talking of American retro, nothing says 1950s style like an Airstream. So if that’s what floats your boat, head towards Chichester in West Sussex. You can immerse yourself in the era, but don’t worry, because they still have all mod cons and, more importantly, power and phone charging points, as well as a hot tub and a fire pit!
There are four different Airstreams, but our favourite is the “Iconic,” which has been refurbed like an American diner complete with a booth, chrome table, and a hardwood kitchen.
Nearby: Chichester is a cathedral city that is enclosed within an ancient Roman wall. It’s small enough to explore by foot and has markets, artisans, cafés, and restaurants. From Chichester, it’s not far to Chichester Harbour, which is a series of inlets and pretty quayside towns and villages. The harbour is an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty but has lots of history to discover too. Or you could just grab your bucket and spade and head to the sandy beaches of the Witterings.
Address: Silver Airstream Rental Chapel Lane, Chichester, PO18 9AW
Skoolie Stays, Storrington
Sleeping in an old school bus might not sound glamorous, but wait until you see this one because it’s gorgeous. Just outside Storrington in West Sussex, this is an off-grid experience in an American school bus that has been beautifully refitted by hand with teak, oak, and pine and using recycled materials. And you’ll love the painstaking attention to detail and the retro feel.
Nearby: The school bus is in a great location for anyone who wants to explore the South Downs. It’s just outside Storrington (which is more or less the halfway point of the South Downs Way), but it’s also great if you want to head down to Brighton or the coast. The area has a couple of nearby castles to explore, like Grand Arundel, sumptuous Amberley (where they do a fantastic afternoon tea), or the ruins of Bramber Castle.
Address: Little Thakeham Farm, Storrington, RH20 3EF
Book Your Stay HereOastbrook Estate Vineyard, Robertsbridge
Glamping in a Sussex vineyard? What’s not to love? Oastbrook Estate Vineyard in East Sussex makes sparkling and still wines, which means you can start your stay with a glass of bubbles on their waterside terrace and include a vineyard tour in your itinerary.
This is glamping at its best because their glamorous bell tents include a luxurious king-size bed and private heated shower. And if you don’t want to stay in a bell tent, they also have a Hobbit House.
Nearby: Bodiam Castle is a 14th-century moated castle that is a short walk away, and, in the summer, you can enjoy a river cruise to the castle or Rye. Rye is picture postcard pretty with cobbled streets and an ancient smugglers’ inn called The Mermaid Inn. When you’ve finished exploring Rye’s Ypres Tower and climbed to the top of the local church for aerial views of the county, head down to Rye Harbour for a stunning coastal walk.

Book Your Stay HereCuckmere Camping Pods, Seaford
Cuckmere Haven is one of the most iconic spots along the Sussex coast. So why not grab yourself a beautifully decorated wooden pod? You literally have the Sussex Coast and the South Downs on your doorstep, or rather at the foot of your own little decking area.
Pull up a chair and plan your adventures with some of the best views in the county. If it’s a special occasion, you can also order fizz and chocolates too! Well, why not?
Nearby: Cuckmere Haven is between the two coastal towns of Eastbourne and Seaford, and it’s also right at the start of the famous Seven Sisters Cliffs. There’s endless walking to explore, or you could head inland a little and discover the smuggling history of Alfriston or try wine tasting on the crest of the South Downs at the famous Rathfinny Vineyard. If you’re with family, there is a museum in Seaford and a fort in Newhaven, and if you’re a culture vulture, head to Charleston Farmhouse, the famous home of the Bloomsbury Set.

Book Your Stay HereThe Garden House, Petworth
If you are chomping at the bit to explore the South Downs National Park but also want some historic charm, quirky boutiques, flea markets, and cafés, then head to the Garden House just outside Petworth in West Sussex, where you can stay in a Mongolian Yurt.
A stay here is about that feeling of zen and wellbeing, and the yurt is in a pretty walled garden that oozes tranquillity and charm. It’s got all the luxuries you want as well as a detachable roof so that you can lie back and gaze at the stars.
Nearby: Petworth is known for its cobbled streets and antique shops, but it’s also home to National Trust property Petworth House, which has an incredible collection of art and vast parklands where you’re almost certain to come across herds of deer. Heading out of Petworth, the South Downs are at your feet with miles and miles of walking or cycling, and don’t forget to pay a visit to Stopham Vineyard to try some of their award-winning wines.

Book Your Stay HereHeavenly Hoots, Mayfield
Hoots is a stunning treehouse, which you’ll find in a little wood just outside Mayfield in East Sussex. Approach via the wooden walkway, and at the end of a day exploring the area, warm your toes in front of the wood burner.
Alternatively, on a warm day, wake up to coffee on the treetop balcony. This is a wonderful romantic retreat but also has room for two children if you want to go family glamping.
Nearby: Mayfield is a very pretty and historic village that has several cafés and pubs. There are also many vineyards in the area, including Off The Line near Hellingly, Wildwood Vineyard, and Hidden Spring. It’s also only a short drive to the start of the Cuckoo Trail, an 11-mile trail (suitable for walkers and cyclists of all abilities) that runs from Heathfield to Polegate with an extension to Shinewater Park, Eastbourne.
