Red Dragonfly Productions is bringing back their critically acclaimed show, “The Empress and Me,” to the Brighton Fringe this May. From the 14th to the 15th and again on the 22nd, The Rotunda Theatre will tell the true story that unfolded between the cultures of the East and West.
The Empress and Me tells the captivating tale of Lizzie Yu, a woman caught between two worlds. Raised in France as a refined Victorian lady, Lizzie’s life takes a dramatic turn when her diplomat father is recalled to China in 1903.
Suddenly, she finds herself thrust into the heart of the Forbidden City, entangled in the complex political web of the Imperial Court. Not only must Lizzie navigate this new reality, but she is also entrusted with the prestigious role of lady-in-waiting to the formidable Empress Cixi.
The play delves into Lizzie’s struggles as she tries to reconcile her Western upbringing with the traditions and expectations of the Eastern court. Witness her journey of cultural adaptation, self-discovery, and her unique position as a bridge between two vastly different worlds.
Red Dragonfly Productions: The Empress and Me
Red Dragonfly Productions, known for making East-Asian stories accessible to British and international audiences, believes “The Empress and Me” resonates deeply with today’s world. As producer Michelle Yim states, “It seems appropriate to bring this show back, especially when we are all trying to find our place in an ever-changing world.” Lizzie’s experience of navigating cultural differences offers a poignant reflection on our own struggles with identity, belonging, and finding our place in a globalized society.
“The Empress and Me” has garnered rave reviews from critics, with the Adelaide Theatre Guide praising it for being “full of ambition, politics and cultural tension,” and the British Theatre Guide at EdFringe commending it as “a brilliant performance… there is always new wisdom to be found even in the oldest of stories.”
