IIn the heart of Brighton’s cultural scene, Fabrica will host an immersive celebration of one of the most enigmatic writers of the 20th century, Franz Kafka. Natasha Higdon, the artistic director behind ‘The Writer’s Mark,’ invites you to explore the depths of Kafka’s legacy through theatre pieces and surrealist art installations on the 7th and 8th of February 2024.

Franz Kafka, the introspective genius, transformed the mundane into the extraordinary. His stories, such as ‘Metamorphosis,’ continue to resonate as vivid depictions of the human condition.

As we dive deeper into Kafka’s mind, we discover the topics of societal struggles and personal turmoil. ‘The Writer’s Mark’ aims to unravel these layers and bring Kafka’s words to life through a series of interactive installations, ensemble performances, and theatre acts.

what to expect from the writer’s mark?

Natasha Higdon, with the support of volunteers, has curated an experience that dives into Kafka’s world. Each piece displayed at this exhibition captures the essence of Kafka’s tormented honesty. What’s more, local artists have contributed their talents, creating unique pieces that delve into the celebrated writer’s psyche.

The event will run from Wednesday, February 7th until Thursday, February 8th. The event will run from 6:30 pm – 9:15 pm with the art installations available to explore from 6:15 pm until 7:15 pm. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions during the optional Q&A at 9:15 pm.

Before the Q&A you can expect the following:

7:15 pm – I am happy to work. Are you happy to work?

Where do we draw the line between Kafka and his ideas for Metamorphosis? In this reinterpretation the lines between Mr Samsa and Franz Kafka’s father are blurred as he asks, “Father – Can I have a glass of water,” on that bitter cold night in Prague – only to be shut outside in the cold. What would keep him from going insane throughout the night? His imagination. His Metamorphosis. His imagined beetle.

7:45 pm – Dolls

Dolls is a physical theatre piece, communicating the ‘bond’ between a child and her doll. What happens when this doll is lost forever? Sheer panic; as a young girl tries desperately to find her missing doll, only to discover letters from her doll’s travels from around the world.

This story is inspired by the many accounts from Kafka’s friends who claimed he wrote letters impersonating a doll after her disappearance one day in a park in Berlin – he wrote the young girl several letters up until his death in 1924. No letters were ever found but the sentiment and story live on.

8:15 pm – Nine stories performed from Franz Kafka’s Contemplation (1912)

From a selection of eighteen of Kafka’s short stories, nine are being presented – which begins with Max Brod’s dilemma – to burn Kafka’s works or to continue his legacy.
