We Love Brighton’s Sharanya Chakraborty Reviews Candlelight Spring: Coldplay vs Imagine Dragons On Saturday 12th April
As someone who has always had their taste in music all over the place, flitting between classical music and pop hits every so often, I was thrilled to be presented with the opportunity to visit a classical re-interpretation of Coldplay and Imagine Dragons’s songs, brought to Brighton by Candlelight Concerts.
Firstly, I would have to take a moment to appreciate that this opportunity also gave me the
chance to finally step inside the Royal Pavilion in Brighton after having walked by it countless
times. The interiors are as regal as you’d expect them to be, and the music room in which the concerttook place had a lavish chandelier that brought the ambience up by several notches.

If you’ve never been inside the Pavilion but have always wondered what it must be like, I would recommend taking an opportunity such as this to finally satisfy your curiosity.
As we entered, we were welcomed and guided warmly by the lovely team of organisers.
Additionally, to make guests feel even more special and prepare them for a candlelight
environment, the whole way from the entrance to the music room, was lined by candles on
both sides.

We were shown into the spacious music room, to our zone of seats, which you can
select according to your preference when you purchase the tickets for the show. In my opinion, it will not matter too much even if you get a seat at the back because the music will captivate you no matter where you are seated.
That brings me to the actual show and experience. The musicians are the very talented Sussex String Quartet made up of two violinists, a viola player and a cellist. The show began with them being centrestage, surrounded by candles. They started with some upbeat numbers like ‘Something Just Like This’ by Coldplay and ‘Radioactive’ by Imagine Dragons before moving on to some romance and mellow tunes like Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’ and Imagine Dragons’s ‘Next to Me’.
I was very pleased that they also decided to play one of my favourites from Imagine Dragons,
‘Believer’. They closed the show with ‘Viva la Vida’, a classic among Coldplay listeners.

It was a unique experience not just because of the blend of musical genres but because it is a
nice introduction to classical music for pop listeners as well as a dip into pop hits for the ones
who appreciate the charm of classical instruments. Also, they demonstrated a wide range of
musical techniques and all of it came together in harmony to create percussion and piano notes without any of them being present.

The range of musical diversity covered in the span of the concert while staying true to captivating classical crescendos was thrilling to witness. The musicians were also gracious to give us some trivia about the bands and the music, interspersed throughout the show.
I would highly recommend Candlelight Concerts to anyone in Brighton looking to experience
music in a redefined manner or just seeking something new to try out. Either way, you will leave satisfied with how you decided to spend your evening.
