Top 5 Historical Places You Should Add To Your Bucket List

Are you a fan of history just like I am? If the answer is yes, then I assume that you love spending time at museums, watching informative documentaries, or reading books that are dedicated to certain eras in history.

And all of these activities are a great way to get yourself familiar with the ancient world, for instance, however, if you’re a huge history buff like some people, then doing these things won’t simply satisfy your needs.

Then it’s time to take things up a notch and travel to places where you’ll get the opportunity to see some of the world’s most amazing historical sites. If you share my opinion, then cast your eyes on these suggestions below.

St. Peter’s Basilica

It is widely known that Rome is packed with different attractions, and surely one of the most visited ones when it comes to this capital, is St. Peter’s Basilica. According to some, it is one of the holiest catholic sites in the world.

Why it’s important to pay this a visit? Well, that’s because this magical place comes with astonishing structures that will show you how omnipotent and above all, essential Roman history and art are.

That’s why you should definitely go there, whenever you decide to visit Rome. If you want to see this Basilica from top to bottom, then I would suggest you opt for a St. Peter’s Basilica tour because only then you’ll get the chance to see every inch of it. These tours normally last up to two hours and are led by knowledgeable guides. If you plan on staying in Rome longer, you can check out these hotels in Rome for your accommodation.

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Also known as the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, this is one of the most mesmerizing historical sites in Moscow. Even though it’s breathtaking, unfortunately, it’s not as popular as some other landmarks of the Russian capital.

What I love about this cathedral, is the fact that it looks quite different in comparison to the other buildings in the country. It was constructed between 1555 and 1561 at the instance of Ivan the Terrible because he wanted two commemorate two major battles.

Even though in the beginning it was an Orthodox Christian church, in the meantime, it has become a museum where you can rarely come across the prayer service. If you would like to see an amazing piece of architecture, then you must definitely pay this place a visit.

Petra

During its heyday, Petra was a widely popular commerce center where people used to trade Chinese silks, Arabian incense, and Indian spices. Nabateans constructed the ancient city in 400 B.C.E. in the country’s southwestern desert, however, the Western wasn’t familiar with it up until the 1800s.

If you would like to visit Petra Archaeological Park, you can do so through Wadi Musa, which is a small town that is in its near vicinity that is loaded with marvelous, and luxurious hotels. A one-day ticket for tourists who spend at least one day in this country is somewhere around $70 if you’re an adult, while kids who are younger than 12 do not have to pay anything.

Stonehedge

If you decide to travel to the United Kingdom, then you simply must not overlook one of its most popular sites. I was shocked by the fact that it’s even older than the Pyramids. Not only is it ancient, but it’s also one of the most mysterious structures ever!

But what makes it so mysterious? Well, that’s because, still, to this day, we do not have the answers to two most basic questions, who built it and what was the reason behind it? I mean it wouldn’t be so puzzling if Stonehedge was something small and light.

However, what remains the secret is how on earth have people managed to transport these stones from 200 miles away and managed to put them so high. Not to mention that back then, wheels weren’t even discovered!

The only thing we do know is that it was built in various stages and that it comes with almost 60 holes that used to hold a lot more stones.

The Forbidden City

Even though it’s called a forbidden city, this historical site isn’t actually a real city, but it represents a palace complex that’s really massive. No wonder people define it as a city. It has 980 buildings, and more than 178 acres, and contains the biggest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the universe.

I know that the world boasts phenomenal historical sites, however, since I do not have enough room to enumerate them all, today I decided to speak about the ones which left the biggest impression on me.

Andy Macpherson

Andy Macpherson is a Brighton-based blogger, amateur golfer and photographer with a passion for capturing the essence of his surroundings. Born and raised in Hove, he has spent almost his entire life exploring the streets and beaches of Brighton, always with a DLSR in hand. When he's not out taking photos or hacking his way around the golf course, Andy can often be found gorging on Pad Thai. As a self-proclaimed foodie, Andy is always on the lookout for new restaurants and dishes to try, which is the main reason behind why he loves reviewing food places for the site.
