Are you ready to immerse yourself in a brand-new experience? Step into the world of Van Gogh at Brighton Dome’s newly refurbished Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre. Brighton, home of artistic spirits, welcomes its first immersive sensory exhibition, unlike anything you’ve seen before.
This unique experience takes art to a new level, and unlike a normal art gallery exhibition with static paintings, this show takes you on a captivating journey through dynamic image projection all over the room and incorporation of all senses.
I had previously heard of this unique experience across social media when it was happening in other cities around the world and was fascinated by it.
Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by the staff, who scanned our tickets and directed us to the drinks area. Since this was a preview event, we received a ticket each to redeem a free drink at the bar.
Stepping into the first room, we were surrounded by displays featuring information on what the experience is about and how smell, music, and visuals are incorporated throughout. This area told the story of Van Gogh by showcasing his work and accompanying text information on rectangular panels that described different stages of his life and mental health, which played a big role in the inspiration behind his paintings.
The area was highly accessible, with sign language and audio options available via QR codes. You are free to move to the next area at any point during the display, but in total, it is advised to set aside 90 minutes for the whole experience.
As we moved onwards, we were met with a short corridor filled with mirrors and fairy lights. Above us was a painting of ‘The Starry Night’, reflecting in the mirror around. We were then greeted by the main area where SENSORY4™ projectors showcased Van Gogh’s story. From his early works to his renowned sunflowers and starry nights, everything came to life across walls and even on the floor.
One quote read, “I want to touch people with my art,” which he’s accomplished. I looked around to see mesmerised gazes of people. The room was silent, and everyone watched in awe as the art shifted. We walked around the room exploring the displays on each wall and eventually decided to take a seat to enjoy the show.
I think what really made the experience worth seeing was the computer-animated images of paintings by Van Gogh being projected all over the Brighton Dome, something you can’t find anywhere else. The exhibition took us on a journey through time, offering insight into Van Gogh’s life, inspirations, and struggles through thousands of images of his art and related photos alongside synchronised classical music, making it an emotional experience.
In search of the activity room, we came across a café and bar as we made our way upstairs. A corridor on the upper floor of the Brighton Dome painted portraits of Van Gogh and led us to the activity room, which featured three areas. Firstly, there was a replica of Van Gogh’s bedroom, which was designed with such detail it felt like they had brought the painting to life.
Part of this room also featured a painting by Pauly The Painter, a Brighton-based artist who focuses on landscape paintings. He created an amazing piece inspired by Van Gogh’s Starry Night, featuring Brighton Pier and The Dome.
Van Gogh Alive is currently with the chance to win this painting and a VIP experience. To enter, all you need to do is register for their newsletter before June 17th, and don’t forget to attend the exhibition before July 18th to witness the painting before it’s gone.
This activity room provided plenty of opportunities for Instagram-worthy photos, especially the adjacent sunflower room. However, we found that taking photos in this room was harder than anticipated without getting the reflection of the door in the image.
There was also a ‘learn to sketch’ area with easels and a video playing every 3 minutes guiding you step by step through how to create your own rendition of Van Gogh’s Bedroom. Once we enjoyed the different areas of the activity rooms, we went downstairs to the gift shop, which housed Van Gogh-inspired souvenirs ranging from shirts to magnets to tote bags to puzzles and beyond. We found the prices to be reasonable.
