I was whisked away to the streets of Mexico when I visited the popular Mexican restaurant Wahaca. From the moment I stepped inside, the lively atmosphere, colourful décor, and upbeat music transported me to the vibrant Mexican culture.

I was in awe when I opened their menu, jam-packed with options that showcase bold Mexican flavours. I had a hard time deciding with so many tempting options, from small plates, tacos, quesadillas, burritos, and larger dishes. I’m sure the waiter got a little tired of me asking for “another five minutes” to finish scanning the menu! As part of their menu, they offer a ‘Wahaca for one’ selection of dishes, including Guacamole and Tortilla Chips, freshly made Sonoran Hummus, delicious Sweet Potato and Feta Taquito and 2 tacos of your choice all for just £14.95, allowing you to try a bit of everything at a fantastic price!
I particularly enjoyed the Rainbow Bowls, which include black beans, green rice, fresh guacamole, a tangy kick of pink pickled onions, and a sweet-flavoured salsa that brings the bowl together. The staff are happy to adapt dishes, which is always nice, and offer Free Range Chicken, tender Slow-Cooked Beef or, for vegetarians, Sweet Potato and Tenderstem Broccoli tossed in a finger-licking garlic herb oil.

I was pleased to find out that Wahaca is also now offering two new chef specialities. These include a delicious Smoky Caramelised Pork Belly, grilled Achiote Seabass and a juicy, signature Roast Riverford Organic Squash.
Plant based goodness: inclusive options at Wahaca
Many restaurants have limited options for vegetarians and vegans, typically offering only a few choices. Wahaca, on the other hand, is a refreshing change. They have an entire set menu catering to vegans!
Wahaca’s vegan menu offers a range of plant-based delights, such as their jackfruit tacos, which mimic traditional pulled pork flavours beautifully. My highlights include the Ancho Mushroom Tacos, Plantain tacos, Plant-based Chicken and Avocado Tacos and Black Bean and Cheese Quesadilla.
I appreciated their range of non-meat tacos, which included mouth-watering ingredients like crispy grilled halloumi, mushrooms with a jalapeno mayo kick and sweet plantain paired with creamy feta. Wahaca’s new Beet Tartare tostadas are a must-have (at just £6.50) and pair perfectly with crunchy Veggie Nachos, topped with cream, a cheese sauce and a light salsa for a perfect balance of flavours.
After all that food, I was desperately craving a drink to wash it all down. Wahaca’s refreshing house cocktails did not disappoint. I decided to spice things up with a fiery Passion Fruit and Pineapple Picante, while my friends went for the Marmalade Mezcalita, which was a sweeter end to a flavourful evening. If you’re a fan of the classics, I’d say the freshly shaken Classic Margarita is the drink for you.

Now for the most important part: Dessert! I eagerly examined Wahaca’s outstanding selection of crispy Churros, moist Chocolate and Pecan brownies, Tres Leches Tiramisu (for coffee lovers) and their Ice Cream Sundae with brownie and honeycomb chunks. Our waiter happily recommended the brownies, which we enjoyed.
Supporting ethical practices and local producers
I was surprised to learn about Wahaca’s commitment to sustainability, with their sustainably sourced fish, grass-fed beef and free-range pork and chicken. Their planet-friendly, low-carbon choices make Wahaca one of my favourite restaurants to visit in Brighton.
Wahaca is open everyday from 12pm to 10pm offering a full day of fun, flavour and vibes. It is important to note that prices and availability do vary.
