6 of the Best Burger Places in Brighton

Burgers have been going somewhat out of fashion. In a time where we are more scrupulous over what we eat, and often look to sustainability as our first consideration, Burgers have found themselves on the backburner. Luckily, for the Burger lovers, Brighton is an eclectic melting pot of choice when it comes to culinary delights. Even with so much choice, Burgers are still sought after. From energy and environmentally conscious vegan Burgers, to locally sourced Gourmet creations, all the way to that guilty pleasure, dripping with grease from the four patties that form an unwieldable monster. Brighton has every Burger you could want. Read to find out where to find the right Burger for you!

The Rum Kitchen

Although not a typical Burger place, and Burger-wise providing only 4 options, one of them being Vegetarian.  This Caribbean twist on a well-versed classic is very welcome. From the first bite of their Caribbean ‘Buns’ you’ll find yourself taken through a myriad of flavours. The initial crunch of the bun and lettuce, followed by succulent Chicken breast, coated in jerk marinade, searing and lingering just perfectly before it’s interrupted by a tangy chilli jam that provides a reprieve from the pickles, all before your final destination, an at first, cooling Scotch Bonnet Mayo, quelling this battle of the palette, before ending it with a fiery finale, as the spice kicks in, and you are left needing to experience that journey again, and again.  If you still need selling on this place after all that, probably best you stick to KFC.

The Coal Shed

You know you’re going to experience a high quality burger when you visit the best steak house this side of London. The Coal Shed certainly doesn’t hold back on their offerings. Stacking their Burgers high and full of gorgeous, well seasoned prime steak patties, lettuce, pickles, tomato and onion. With additional toppings available including cheddar cheese, bacon, mushrooms, fried onions or egg, The Coal Shed offer a gourmet burger at a reasonable price. Add on some beef dripping chips and you’ll be laughing. Fantastic food at a great restaurant, The Coal Shed never disappoints.

Burger Off

A hidden gem located at the New Oak Pub in Hollingbury, Burger Off is more a ‘greasy spoon’ than burger bar. Think two blokes in stained whites serving you endless canned drinks and fries. However, Burger Off have got their product nailed down. Homemade, chargrilled, juicy and large, the Burger Off boys know their stuff and they know what you want. A wide range to choose from that includes forgotten classics like the 1000 Island and Hawaiian burgers. Quick, filling, easy, inexpensive burgers of a very good size and quality. There is indoor and outdoor seating available and food is served Wednesday and Thursday from 5-9.15pm and Friday and Saturday 12-9:15pm.

Vegan Noms @ The World’s End

With such an ominous name, you’d be forgiven for fearing a ‘heart attack’ in waiting. But The World’s End houses Vegan Noms, a fantastic, vegan burger and junk food joint. With specials and classics alike, this place is as good as it gets when it comes to junk food. It’s hard to pick from such a perfectly crafted menu, with 5 Burgers available year round, Diet ruining, mouth-watering Hotdogs and Vegan Wings. Throw in some incredibly tempting sides too, and you’ll be throwing out those skinny jeans you just about fit into after one evening. Of course they also have limited time Burgers, such as the ever popular katsu Burger. Bringing Japanese flavour, and combining it with western decadence.

Burger Brothers

Locally sourced, 100% beef patties slathered in a wide variety of toppings and sauces and served with a cheeky Brighton attitude and of course cooked freshly to order. Burger brothers is the closest you can get to guilt free meat. As usual however, they offer a choice of 3 vegetarian options: A ‘Halloumi burger’, a ‘Veggie Special Burger’, and a ‘Vegan Special Burger’. The Benneton Burger is a must for fans of strong flavours and Formula one veterans.  With Blue Stilton, Portobello Mushroom and wasabi mayo as the key ingredients, it’s an acquired taste, and a must have for complex taste buds.  This vibrant burger place is a must to check out! With real quality ingredients, and genuine thought put into their menu, it’s worth checking out as soon as you can. Being held in such high esteem, it sells out quickly. So grab your first chance to try their Burgers by both hands!

Honest Burgers

When I see a place that boasts their chips being hailed as “edible Crystal Meth” by a renowned food critic, I cant exactly pass up the chance to try a meal of theirs for myself. With the first Menu I’ve ever seen use a Flowchart, Honest Burgers offer chicken, Beef, and vegetarian patties, with a few Burgers using each patty to pick from.  The Vegetarian patties are faux meat, so rest assured you wont find the eternal vegan cop out of a Bean burger.

Of course, I came for the chips, which by the way come free with every burger, but the vegetarian southern fried burger was everything I’d want. A tender fritter, crunchy slaw and pickles with a cooling mayo to wash over the tangy crunch. Of course I tried the chips too, and whilst the lack of a dizzying high was a quiet disappointment, the chips left me with an insatiable need for more, and certainly made it hard to keep room for my main.

  1. The Rock*Ola burger bar on Tidy st has a bigger burger by far! Open on Friday evenings from 6 to nine. It weighs in over a kilogram before you add the fries!
