Things to do This Week in Brighton (May 9th-14th)

Here’s a lil list of what you might want to get up to if you’re looking to get out this week in Brighton!

The Brighton Fringe Festival

If you are unaware and are heading to Brighton anytime in this month of May, then you are in luck! Washed with things to do, The Brighton Fringe is one of Brighton’s highlights of the year. With a vast variety of events on, I’d say you’re pretty spoilt for choice!

For the eternally strapped-for-cash, there are plenty of free shows for your enjoyment, the trick is finding them. Luckily we have published a quick guide to some of the must-see events, for the rest of the festival!

There’s so much to explore, with some acclaimed guests smattered throughout the proceedings. For those that love a good laugh, Nish Kumar headlines a quintuple bill featuring former Taskmaster compatriot Lou Sanders.

It’s an evening of comedy sure to deliver politically charged lampooning of the status quo. It’s not on till next week, on the 19th, but with such an exciting lineup, you might need extra notice!

On Sunday the 14th, Comedian Zoe Lyons, known for frequent appearances on Have I Got News For You, QI, Mock the Week, and Live at the Apollo, performs her latest tour, Bald Ambition as part of the Fringe Festival. Experienced and well-versed, this performance will no doubt tickle your funny bone.

If arts and theatre are your speed, The Fringe has got you more than covered. The incredible circus act Gravity & Other Myths (Australia) performs their Newton-defying show filled to the brim with chaos and wonderment from Tuesday to Friday( 9th-11th).

With much more to explore and a festival stocked with something for everyone, there is no reason not to check out the going on at the Fringe Festival. There’s almost 4 weeks left of the festival, so find something to see now before you while away the time procrastinating!

Torstigbar

Most of us enjoy a few rounds of drinks at a bar, but too often we find ourselves hating everything the morning after. Whether it’s the searing hangover or the regret of making a tit of ourselves to a random stranger, it’s safe to say the worst parts of a night out often stem from the alcohol itself.

So what if you could enjoy an evening at a bar with your friends without the fear of it getting out of hand? Or perhaps you have long come to the conclusion that alcohol is an influence you’d rather scrub from your life, yet find yourself missing the taste of a nice beer or the atmosphere of a laid-back trendy bar?

Luckily, if anything I’ve said has resonated with you, there’s a solution, in Torstigbar, Brighton’s only non/low alcoholic bar! Its ample selection is there to provide every alcoholic dalliance without the alcohol. Enjoy your favourite flavours, with every low and non-alcoholic alternative you could think of!

From refreshing Cocktails to de-alcoholised Wine, they have all the tastes you love without the associated health problems or embarrassment. “But the effect of alcohol is the fun part” I hear you exclaim. If you’re really stuck on that idea, Torstigbar has an alternative that will get you feeling merry without any drawbacks with their ‘Mood Altering range’.

This selection of drinks uses natural ingredients to deliver mood-boosting effects, mimicking that happy ‘buzz’ alcohol can deliver. Best of all, unlike the lucky dip that is alcohol, you know the effect each drink will have on you.

There’s no nasty surprises here! With drinks to give your mood a boost, CBD-infused drinks to help you relax, and everything in between, you can still enjoy that merry feeling!

It’s a great bar to try with your friends for a fun evening that’s sure to make memories, rather than take them away.

Embers

The chefs behind award-winning restaurants Isaac and Terre a Terre have teamed up in a duo sure to strike fear in the hearts of competing restaurants. Dave Marrow and Isaac Bartlett-Copeland have come together to form Embers, a restaurant that attempts to strip back cooking to its most authentic form.

A menu exclusively filled with dishes cooked on a wood-fired stove, the idea for the restaurant was born out of rising energy costs. As both chefs wondered if a restaurant centered around the premise of carbon-neutral wood-fired cooking could thrive.

It seems they have quickly answered their own musings, with a resounding yes. An open kitchen like no other, the stripped-back approach to cooking shows the beauty in simplicity.

Their carefully designed menu brings every morsel of flavour out of each dish. Comprised of a slew of well-curated small plates, there’s so much flavour to savour. Their menu also features 3 grand centrepiece dishes, Hake, Aged Pork Tomahawk, and Miso Celeriac the crux of each dish respectively.

For a delightful meal for two or a nice meal with friends, this establishment exudes class through the exquisite culinary ingenuities they produce, all made without harming the environment and endearing to a gorgeous mantra of rustic dishes that dance on the taste buds.

Brighton Big Drag Pageant 2023

Its one of the biggest Brighton-based drag events of the year, and with the amount of Drag shows year-round, that’s no small feat.

With Drag Kings and Queens alike, you’re in for a slew of bombastic, expressive and incredibly creative performers! Featuring all of Brighton’s biggest Drag acts and many up-and-comers, this is a mecca for Drag fans. You won’t find a more salacious pageant this side of the Atlantic!

There are infamous judges, guest appearances, prizes, and of course hugely talented performers! Watch as over 20 acts leave nothing on stage as they vye for one of the biggest prizes in Uk Drag.

With an abundance of sass and ability, these drag acts are all worthy of glory, but only one can take home the crown, cash and most importantly, fame!

This ones on Today(9th of May) at 19:00pm! So hurry and book before it’s too late!

Eurovision watch parties

It’s that fateful time of the year when all of Europe (and some invited non-europeans) host the world’s biggest song contest! Often filled with cheesiness, unique characters and that one entry you hate but can’t stop listening to. It’s the premier competition for the disinterested in sports.

Always dramatic, filled with flair, and someone (usually the Uk) gets destroyed in the rankings. The only thing I can think of that could be better than watching this at home with some family and friends, is watching it on a big screen World Cup style!

Yes, you can enjoy this already wild yearly spectacle amongst fellow fans, all just as passionate and all getting progressively less sober.

With public viewing events in both the lovely ‘One Gardens’ and in multiple bars/pubs, you can experience Eurovision like never before. It’s third only to being in the audience at Eurovision itself and performing at Eurovision itself.

Brighton Vintage Kilo Sale

A vintage sale like no other, the Vintage Kilo sale is the closest thing to heaven for everything vintage and anyone with a penchant for upcycling clothes. I can comfortably claim this is the biggest vintage sale I’ve ever seen, and very likely the biggest you’ll have seen!

Rather than pay for individual items, everything here is paid for simply by weight. It’s like a pick and mix for clothes! Each Kilo of vintage clothing will always come to £20, so grab a biodegradable and pack as much as you want in!

Feel like you’re too picky to realistically expect to take home a kilo? Don’t then, pricing is £1 for every 50 grams so even if you only find one thing, you’re still getting a steal of a bargain!

You need a ticket, but at the low additional price of £2 for general admission, you’ll still be bringing home vintage necessities without breaking the bank.

If you fear all the good stuff going early, for an extra £1 you can gain entry an hour earlier with the aptly named early bird ticket. Under 12’s also go free.

Not that you should worry about the good stuff going early, with the vintage fair packing 9 metric TONNES of stock, you’d have to be pretty darn late to miss out on all the items you desire.

Furthermore, the stock is constantly replenished. Yes, if you thought they were laying out 9 tonnes of clothes all at once, then you must be expecting the biggest fair in history.

Instead, stock is always kept to full capacity, meaning that even if you do miss out on things, there’s every chance the perfect item crops up an hour later.

With Men’s, women’s, and children’s items, there are bargains to be had for all. With every item from the 60s and onwards and many prominent brands available to grab on the cheap.
