The Shining Lights of Service At Royal Pavilion In Brighton

This multi-coloured light installation is a commemoration of the WWI Indian Hospital, paying tribute to the soldiers cared for in the Royal Pavilion between 1914 and 1916. The Adelaide Balcony of the Royal Pavilion in Brighton will display The Shining Lights of Service from November 11th 2023 to January 28th 2024, offering both locals and visitors a glimpse into the heritage of India and a reflection on the sacrifices made during the First World War.

Chila Kumari Singh Burman, a celebrated artist known for her radical feminist practice that explores representation, gender, and cultural identity, was chosen for this significant project as part of the IWM 14-18 NOW Legacy Fund. The Imperial War Museums’ national arts commissioning program collaborated with Brighton & Hove Museums to bring Burman’s vision to life.

In preparation for her commission, Burman visited the Pavilion in 2022, drawing inspiration from the rich history embedded in its walls. Collaborating with Royal Pavilion staff and historian Kiran Sahota of Believe in Me CIC, Burman created a set of new neon works in her London studio.
